Here is a curious contradiction in much contemporary atheism. On the one hand, atheists are (of course) opposed to religion. On the other hand, however, many atheists today *admit* that religion has an evolutionary survival value, since it creates and/or enhances community feeling. And hence strengthens said community. (They might also add that religious conservatives have more children, while woke liberals make their children sterile.)
But if so,
*atheism is a net negative*. So why are the atheists atheists? Why do they
rejoice every single time statistics supposedly show that atheism is
increasing? Are they just honestly confused, or is something else going on
here? Some kind of bizarre nihilism? A desire to play the role of martyr, or what?
Another contradiction: atheists admit that religion gets stronger if people´s situation gets worse. But if so, *religion will never disappear*, since the human condition will – overall – always be shit. Religion will certainly not disappear during the 21st century, as the world situation progressively deteriorates.
So why should we root for atheism? *By the logic of the
atheists themselves*, we should rather join a religion or perhaps create a new
one…
A far fetched straw to reach for but perhaps atheists could make religions evolve into versions that are more well taught out, harder to debunk and in a very general way more beneficial?
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, masses of atheists is a rather new phenomen and the evolutionary disadvantages it carries can be seen as its childhood diseases. Childhood diseases can be deadly but if atheism survives them thats perhaps when atheism really takes off. . Perhaps atheism can evolve in such a way that it will not leave demographical walk over to religion.
Yes, something like Communism or an atheist form of nationalism, perhaps.
