The link below goes to an interesting and somewhat eclectic essay at the blog "Dharmata". The blogger´s name is Alexander Duncan. He seems to be a Canadian social and Green activist who identifies with Mahayana and perhaps Tibetan Buddhism.
In the essay, Duncan discusses the UFO phenomenon and its connection (if any) to Buddhism. Jacques Vallée seems to be his favorite ufologist. Duncan also mentions John Mack, Nick Pope, Carl Gustav Jung and...W Y Evans-Wentz. He tries to correlate the UFO phenomenon with traditional Buddhist cosmology, with its devas ("gods"), asuras (here called "anti-gods") and various other supernatural or superhuman creatures. He also mentions that Buddhist monks and kings in ancient times observed UFO-like objects. No surprise there, but...
In a somewhat surprising turn, the blogger argues there may be a connection between Buddhism and aliens. The Buddha could have been an alien and is sometimes depicted as a UFO-shaped object?! He is also identified as a naga, the nagas being serpent-like spirit-beings. Duncan wonders aloud whether these could be reptoid space aliens? The Buddhist symbol, the wheel of dharma, might have been a UFO. A story from the suttas strongly suggesting this is referenced at some length.
Vallée speculated that the UFOs might be part of some kind of "control system". Duncan suggests that maybe Buddhism is part of this system. "UFOs" and "aliens" appear when humanity becomes more materialist and needs to be prodded towards a more spiritual perspective again. The UFOs demonstrate that the supernatural is real.
The blogger also tries to harmonize the Buddhist "creation story" with the Big Bang theory, arguing that the aliens are surviving quasi-divine beings from an earlier universe, sneaking into ours through the Singularity. Some of them are eventually reborn as humans. The malevolent ones are asuras, and so on.
Could be of some interest.
