Correct me if I´m wrong, but did the Democrats in the US House of Representatives just block with the far right Trump-loving "literally Nazis" to unseat a moderate Republican Speaker who just had made a deal with the Democrats about a temporary budget?
Are these the same Dems who told us since about 2015 that Donald Trump and his minions are the gravest threat to democracy and the Republic as we know it? The same Dems who told us for decades that we have to fund SPLC, ADL and the like to fight people like, I don´t know, Matt Gaetz?
Now, further financial assistance to Ukraine is under threat. It also struck me that with the US Congress in de facto recess, there won´t be any action on those darn F-16´s (either way) Turkey claim they want as their prize to admit Sweden into NATO.
So now the Turkish Parliament just got the perfect excuse to table Sweden´s membership application for another six months or so...
And all this because the *Democrats* couldn´t resist slapping the main-line RINOs in the face?! This is such bad optics that some shills here in Sweden try to pin the blame on the Republicans! Ahem, no, most Republican representatives voted against Literal Nazi Gaetz and his motion to vacate...
This might be the Dems´ very own "social fascist" moment, as when the German Communists in Prussia in 1931 blocked with the Nazis to remove a centrist government...
Or it might just be BAU as far as Amerikwa is considered, but I have to say that the BAU BS comes at a very inauspicious moment!
Interesting, I did not foresee the consequences to Sweden's admission to NATO. Your point of Democrats blocking with the far, far right Republicans to oust McCarthy is a hot topic over here as well, where we are (we being those in favor of a democracy rather than an oligarchy) literally in a fight to preserve the Constitution. This is no joke. This will have far reaching consequences as you have noted. Trump's indictments will prevail, he will be convicted for attempting to overturn the will of the people in the 2020 election, which he lost. Convictions of insurrectionists will continue.

Time will tell. But yes, it is but one of many crises waiting in the wings. My own Congressman, Mike Quigley, a Democrat, voted against the funding bill as it did not include aid to Ukraine. Putin is represented by the MAGA republicans, make no mistake. Inauspicious indeed! What times we live in, eh?

The NATO thing is a guess, but I wouldn´t be surprised if Turkey tries to stall the process one more time. Ironically, that high-ranking Democrat who was forced to resign over corruption charges (Menendez?) was also the foremost opponent in Congress of selling F-16´s to Turkey, so ironically his removal could make it more likely that Turkey gets them...well, at least it seemed so last week or so, but now the entire McCarthy thing has upended everything!
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that Turkey is stalling Sweden´s NATO application for another reason entirely: to show Russia that Turkey is still "multi-vectoralist", ready to make deals with both West and East. Drawing out Sweden´s NATO process is good for Russia and hence an argument for Putin to talk to Erdogan. But when he´s at it, Erdogan of course demands both F-16´s from the US and an end to PKK funding from Kurds living in Sweden as de facto conditions for Swedish NATO membership. (They seem to have quietly dropped the demand that Sweden ban Quran burnings, at least for now. Maybe activists in Sweden have burned too few of them lately, who knows.)
Russia and Turkey have moved closer during the recent war in Nagorno-Karabakh. Can the United States discipline its own "NATO ally" Turkey, or will the Turks continue doing whatever they feel like? But if so, NATO is a sick joke, since its militarily second strongest member (Turkey) can´t be counted on if a shooting war breaks out between NATO and Russia...
