Is the Pope based?

Maybe. And then, maybe not. His statements about Chechens and Buryats (Mongols?) are weird, to be sure, but here are the Papal remarks on Russia and Ukraine in context. And in context, the Pope sounds much more moderate. So I suppose it´s interesting that the Kremlin seems to have disavowed him anyway after the remarks below (sorry for the weird formating):

Gerard O’Connell: Holy Father, about Ukraine: Many in the United States have been confused by your seeming unwillingness to directly criticize Russia for its aggression against Ukraine, preferring instead to speak more generally of the need for an end to war, an end to mercenary activity rather than Russian attacks, and to the traffic in arms. How would you explain your position on this war to Ukrainians, or Americans and others who support Ukraine?

When I speak about Ukraine, I speak of a people who are martyred. If you have a martyred people, you have someone who martyrs them. When I speak about Ukraine, I speak about the cruelty because I have much information about the cruelty of the troops that come in. Generally, the cruelest are perhaps those who are of Russia but are not of the Russian tradition, such as the Chechens, the Buryati and so on. Certainly, the one who invades is the Russian state. This is very clear. Sometimes I try not to specify so as not to offend and rather condemn in general, although it is well known whom I am condemning. It is not necessary that I put a name and surname.

On the second day of the war, I went to the Russian embassy [to the Holy See], an unusual gesture because the pope never goes to an embassy. And there I said to the ambassador to tell [Vladimir] Putin that I was willing to travel on condition that he allowed me a tiny window to negotiate. [Sergey] Lavrov, the foreign minister at a high level, replied with a very nice letter from which I understood that for the time being it was not necessary.

I spoke to President Zelensky three times by phone. And I work in general with receiving lists of prisoners, both civilian prisoners and military prisoners, and I have these sent to the Russian government, and the response has always been very positive.

I also thought of traveling, but I made the decision: If I travel, I go to Moscow and to Kyiv, to both, not to one place only. And I never gave the impression that I was covering up the aggression. I received here in this hall, three or four times, a delegation from the Ukrainian government. And we work together.

Why do I not name Putin? Because it is not necessary; it is already known. However, sometimes people latch onto a detail. Everyone knows my stance, with Putin or without Putin, without naming him.

Some cardinals went to Ukraine: Cardinal Czerny went twice; [Archbishop] Gallagher, who is responsible for [relations with] states, spent four days in Ukraine, and I received a report of what he saw; and Cardinal Krajewski went four times. He goes with his van loaded with things and spent last Holy Week in Ukraine. I mean the presence of the Holy See with the cardinals is very strong, and I am in continual contact with people in positions of responsibility.

And I should like to mention that there is in these days the anniversary of the Holodomor, the genocide that Stalin committed against the Ukrainians [in 1932-33]. I believe it is appropriate to mention it as a historical antecedent of the [present] conflict.

The position of the Holy See is to seek peace and to seek an understanding. The diplomacy of the Holy See is moving in this direction and, of course, is always willing to mediate.

Fast as a jehu

In a very recently published book (which I haven´t read yet), American occultist John Michael Greer claims to have found - wait for it - the Holy Grail!

He. Found. What???

The link below goes to a short podcast (circa 28 minutes) in which JMG discusses his theory with the podcaster. The short story (or maybe not) is that the Holy Grail is a secret initiation ritual, the origins of which goes back to the pagan Greek mysteries by way of Gnostic heresies. A 19th century female folklorist tracked down a group that practiced the ceremony, but the knowledge was lost around 1930...

In the podcast, JMG says he reconstructed the ritual of the Holy Grail, but never actually carried it out. Then, the discussion veers into more typical Freemasonic territory, so presumably I have to buy the book, after all!

Fun fact: for most of my life, I wondered about the two expressions "fast as a jehu" and "fast as a Jew". Jehu was an ancient king of Israel, but why the heck is he considered "fast"? JMG at least solved this little mystery for me! :D

Journey to Sahul

“Denisova´s Mystery” is a French documentary from 2022 about the discovery of a “third human form” in a cave in Siberia. The docu features Svante Pääbo, who was recently awarded the Nobel Prize for his extraction of DNA from Neanderthal bones. As for the “third form” humans (really more like the 57th form at this stage), they are known as Denisovans, named after the Russian cave in which their remains were discovered.

The Denisovans were “archaic” humans and probably looked more like Neanderthals than Homo sapiens. Just like the Neanderthals, however, the Denisovans (who survived until about 15,000 years ago) have contributed to the gene pool of Homo sapiens. The documentary speculates that the Denisovans may be ancestral to both Tibetans and Chinese, perhaps giving the former the genes necessary to live at high altitudes. Apparently, Chinese researchers are intrigued by the possibility that the Denisovans may be the forefathers and Ur-mothers of the Chinese people. Dare I guess that some kind of nationalism may be behind this interest? Note also how recent science moves ever closer to the previously disregarded "multi-regional" hypothesis of human origins.

The strongest genetic connection between Denisovans and any population of Anatomically Modern Men (and, I suppose, Women) has been found in New Guinea, principally in remote corners of the large island´s highlands. While Papuans are mostly of our own species, they must have mixed with Denisovans at some point in the very distant past. The French researchers raise some eyebrows over the presence of Denisovans at New Guinea. While most of the East Indies formed part of the Asian landmass during the Paleolithic, there was no land bridge between this area (“Sundaland”) and ancient Australia-New Guinea (“Sahul”). How did the Denisovans cross the sea?

What a remarkably silly question! Here is the obvious answer: they built rafts. Or even small boats. There, I solved the question for you. The question is either based on the idea that Stone Age peoples must have been “primitive”, or that pre-sapiens humans weren´t particularly sapient, and hence somehow couldn´t have done it. In reality, it´s clearly the other way around: they could and they did. That the Denisovans later may have lost that knowledge, becoming forever marooned in the New Guinea highlands with a bunch of cannibals of the more sapient persuasion, doesn´t disprove this. Even Stone Age cultures may have experienced cycles of rise and fall, the rise in this case being the phase of exploration. One might even speculate that the *fall* of some Denisovan land culture could have pushed a particularly clever remnant onto a journey of exploration…

There is clearly a lot more to find out here. Not just about the robust and archaic Denisovans, but also about our own gracile and modern prejudices.

Ancient apocalypse

Thomas Sheridan´s mostly positive review of Graham Hancock´s recent Netflix series "Ancient Apocalypse" (which I haven´t seen).

My current take on the ancient civilization problematique is that "Atlantis" probably never existed...but the anomalies explored by Hancock might be real nevertheless.

Perhaps civilization post-Ice Age is simply older than we hitherto believed, with roots all the way back to the Mesolithic, while the Bronze Age was more advanced than standard history books would allow (more oceanic travel, and so on).

In a sense, that´s actually a more disturbing scenario than the one promoted by Hancock. After all, the Lost Civilization or "Atlantis" had no chance against a gigantic flood perhaps triggered by an impacting comet. But why did the Bronze Age civilization collapse? And how come we don´t know half of its story?

What are the implications that cultures that are obviously part of "our" accepted post-diluvian history can be half forgotten?

BLACK FRIDAY

Credit: Sb2s3

OK, I already spotted two or three cheaters...

Guys, how many times must I tell you: Christmas decorations are *procured* on Black Friday, but you´re not supposed to put them up until Advent Sunday!

Plz respecc the Plan!

Kirtan of the NPCs?

This clip has the title "Sex shop owner attacks the Hare Krishnas", but most of the content is somewhat different.

When I was younger, people did everything to avoid the Hare Krishnas, but here, pedestrians actually *join* the ISKCON teenage brigade as they are dancing and chanting in the streets of London - including the customers outside the sex shop!

Not sure what the heck to think of this, tbh, but there you go...

I suppose the ways of the Blue Lord are indeed mysterious.

Night in the city

I like the vibes here, but is this really the official branch of the ISKCON? I mean, look at the people joining their kirtan!

Krishna and Christ: the same name?

A Hare Krishna discusses with an evangelical Christian (I think). The end is...unexpected. So are some of the arguments of the Hare Krishna devotee.

The cancer of censorship

Dr John Campbell discusses the excess deaths in the wake of the COVID pandemic. These deaths are not attributable to COVID, but it´s not clear what could cause them. At least not in the censored media environment of YouTube...

The lack of hard data is annoying. Especially since some figures seem to indicate that cancer has become more prevalent post-pandemic. Campbell fears that the situation will become even worse in the near future.

At the moment, though, the most dangerous disease is the cancer of censorship!

Rupert Sheldrake on the hippie trail

Rupert Sheldrake talks about his spiritual journey. It turns out that he was on the "hippie trail" in India during the 1970´s. That part of the presentation is *extremely* entertaining!

The talk was held at Cortes Island in Canada, apparently a popular tourist destination. Sheldrake´s description of the religious "diversity" at the island is also quite interesting...

Hanuman is Shiva

The crazy globetrotter Dakota of Earth meets the Aghori...again!

In this clip, the "cannibal cult" is surprisingly clean-shaven when they open a Hanuman temple at 1AM in the night. I´m not even sure whether all persons shown are Aghori, or whether some may be "regular" Hanuman devotees (who often look like wrestlers since they *are*, well, wrestlers).

The puja turns out to be an interesting example of Hindu syncretism, since Hanuman is associated with Rama, an avatar of Vishnu. The Aghori, by contrast, are Shaivas. The solution to the conundrum? They see Hanuman (Rama´s foremost servant) as an incarnation of Shiva! The story is that Rama was a Shiva devotee, and that Shiva repaid him this way.

What happened after the puja was done is less clear, but I suppose it´s right back to the more endo-cannibalistic side of things...

I admit it´s quite funny listening to the old joker Sadhguru.

Atheists often attack Christianity with arguments like "most of the universe is black holes", while Christians retort "yeah, but how can something come from nothing".

Sadhguru affirms *both* arguments. Yes, everything (including black holes) comes from nothing, or rather Nothing, which is nothing else than...Shiva. The Big Bang is His roar, when He comes in touch with Shakti, the creative energy from goddess-knows-where.

Much later, the cosmic Shiva manifested as the alien humanoid Adiyogi in Tibet, also known as "Shiva" to this particular movement.

Eat that!

Based as fuck.

Lost in the Tethys Sea

I already linked to this material before, but here we go again...

Sadhguru and his devotees travel to Lake Manasarovar and carry out some kind of weird shamanistic possession ritual. However, that is too mundane apparently, so Sadhguru claims that it has something to do with Däniken-style aliens!

Even the primordial guru Adiyogi (referred to here as "Shiva") is said to have been an ancient alien...

But sure, the universe is strange, so who the heck knows!

Welcome to the universe

Sadhguru talks too much here, but his conclusions are somewhat interesting. "There is NO MEANING to the universe". Welcome to the world of Shiva´s dance!

Not needed

"Kali is not needed for you" says Sadhguru, the old joker of the crypto-Oshoite neo-Shaiva pseudo-Tantra.

The comments on Kali begin at time stamp 6:11.

Sadhguru evidently believes that Kali and other fierce deities were created by powerful yogis in the past as a kind of energy-patterns or energy-bodies. They can be used for certain (unspecified) purposes, but it´s not something Sadhguru recommends that you even try!

Well, he might be on to something there, I suppose...

Fame and fiction

“The True Story of d´Artagnan” is a French documentary about – wait for it – the musketeer d´Artagnan. Its original French title is “La Véritable Histoire de d´Artagnan”. I always assumed that d´Artagnan and his indefatigable peers Athos, Porthos and Aramis were purely fictional characters, invented by Alexandre Dumas (père) in 1844. The true story turns out to be more complex. D´Artagnan was a real person, but his story was heavily fictionalized already in 1700 by the author Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras, whose picaresque novel “Les mémoires de M. d´Artagnan” inspired Dumas one and a half century later. The three original musketeers of Dumas´ story are also mentioned in de Sandras´ account and are equally heavy “freely based on a not-so-true story”…

D´Artagnan´s original name was Charles de Batz de Castlemore. He was originally from Gascony in southwest France, and while his family wasn´t rich, the mother was of aristocratic descent. The name d´Artagnan comes from her, and Charles de Batz adopted it when moving to Paris to join the Musketeers. Despite his later fame, nobody knows the exact year of his birth, where he is buried, or even how he looked like, although the portrait included in de Sandras´ novel is often considered genuine, perhaps based on a lost portrait painting. Even the place of his birth and upbringing was long unknown.

The Musketeers were the elite soldiers of the French king, and their real motto wasn´t “One for all, all for one” but rather “Where it falls, it brings death”, referring to the canons used by the Musketeers during sieges! D´Artagnan served both in the original Musketeer corps of King Louis XIII and the later, historically more famous version under “the Sun King” Louis XIV. He was the close confidant of both Cardinal Mazarin (the successor of Cardinal Richelieu) and Louis XIV. At the time, France was a whirlpool of political intrigue and rebellion, with d´Artagnan loyally serving the cause of an increasingly absolutist monarchy. He personally protected the king (then just a child) against angry mobs during the rebellion known as the Fronde, carried out “sensitive missions” for Mazarin (they are never specified in the documentary) and participated in various military actions. The most well known event of his career seems to have been the arrest of Louis XIV´s scheming minister of finance, Nicolas Fouquet, whom the king wanted speedily removed from the centers of power.

D´Artagnan was killed in combat (ironically by a bullet from a musket) on 25 June 1673 during the siege of Maastricht, an otherwise successful military campaign of the French army. Well, at least we know the exact date of his death! The Sun King is said to have been devastated. The documentary points out that d´Artagnan is the only historical person in French history who has become famous through his fictional counterpart. Indeed, a large portion of the docu consist of clips from various modern French, British and American films based on Dumas´ “The Three Musketeers”. We also get a sneak peak at the costume drama “Le Roi danse”.

Relatively interesting, if you can find it for free somewhere on the web…

Some noble lies. The list is not exhaustive!

The king is a god, or appointed by a god, is the noble lie of monarchies. In reality, kings appoint themselves.

The oligarchy is actually an aristocracy is the noble lie of oligarchies. In reality, no true aristocracy exists for more than a few generations.

Everyone is equal is the noble lie of democracy. There are street-cleaners even in a democracy, and no, they will never become presidents. Stable democracies are dominated by the middle classes.

Our tribe are the only true humans is the noble lie of tribalism. In reality, your tribe are probably the savages!

All women are sisters is the noble lie of feminism. In reality, women usually support their nation, ethnic group or faith community against all the others (including their women).

Workers have no country is the noble lie of “international” socialism, which is really nationalist.

Everyone can become a Westerner, and wants to, is the noble lie of those who advocate free immigration. In reality, they simply want lower wages and salaries (or voting cattle).

Men can become women simply by an act of subjective will. Cuz reasons. The noble lie of Big Pharma and Big Shrink, who wants to sell you their latest products.

“Our Scripture/tradition is divine” is the noble lie of religion. So is the claim that “only god can be a standard for morality”. In reality, the “revelation” and the “standard” are human, and come from self-appointed priests, who are simply after worldly power.

The noble lie of Communism is the communism.

The noble lie of trans-humanism is the trans-humanism. Ye shall be like gods, hiss...

But the most interesting noble lies are surely those of our own times.

“Climate change is real but can be stopped if we just stop using fossil fuels” is the noble lie of the far left.

“Climate change is real but can be stopped by re-cycling and electric cars” is the noble lie of the moderate left.

“Climate change is real but can be stopped by nuclear power, nuclear power and, ahem, nuclear schmucking power” is the noble lie of the centrists. (“And liquid natural gas”)

“Climate change is fake and we can continue using fossil fuels like before” is the noble lie of the conservatives, populists and fascists.

The reality is that climate change is real, that we can´t stop it, and that it will fuck over the entire world by 2100. At the latest.

And the noble lie of noble truth-telling is that human polities can stop being based on noble lies…

In reality, noble lies are forever.

The ordeal of the abyss

An interesting exposition on Thelema, Aleister Crowley´s magick-esoterick system. The similarities with Tantrism are obvious.

The presentation is better than the one I linked to before (but comes from the same OTO lodge), but needless to say, I disagree with essentially everything in this system. Note the "Satanist" and nihilistic aspects.

Another attempt to cope with a permanently fallen world...

Joan of Arc: the pagan connection

Was Joan of Arc a Shamanistic pagan? Some interesting speculations from our old man Thomas Sheridan, still at large somewhere in County Sligo. But he begins by a blistering (and negative) review of "alternative media" and "Truthers".

Eyes wide shut

Thomas Sheridan´s surprisingly bland reaction to Stanley Kubrick´s controversial film "Eyes Wide Shut".

Blacks and Brownies

Thomas Sheridan (hardly an Afro-centrist) wonders aloud whether the Brownies of Anglo-Irish folklore might be an ancient hidden race of Black African Pygmies that reached the British Isles through Atlantis.

I´ve heard similar speculations before. The extreme Afro-centrist Ivan van Sertima asserts that Pygmies lived in Scandinavia in ancient times. The proof? Legends about trolls! There´s also Robert Grant Haliburton, whose papers on the Dwarf Question I have commented before.

Probably a fringe theory, and as far as I know there is no archeological or genetic evidence for it, but it´s probably not *entirely* impossible either, since Pygmy races were once more widespread than today (in Africa and parts of Asia). Note also "Flores Man", a dimunitive human species nicknamed "The Hobbit".

The original Europeans were probably a unique Black race with blue eyes, but of normal stature, that turned pale-skinned through natural selection in the colder climate, but that´s another story.

Beethoven was White, though.

Demonic gap

Never heard of Derek Prince before. Here, this Pentecostal preacher talks about demons and demonic possession. Note the gap theory and the claim that there has been a pre-Adamic race! Note also the weird humor of the presentation...

Behavior and belonging

What about atheism? By the same logic, atheism isn´t about "lack of belief", but rather about behavior and/or belonging. So arguments *against* God are just as irrelevant as the arguments *for* God. Or are we to believe that atheists are some kind of enlightened rationalist super-humans?

Trinity or Tawheed?

A surprisingly advanced and serious theological critique of Islam from an Orthodox Christian perspective (presumably Eastern Orthodox). Not the usual stuff about Muhammad being a paedophile who enserfed the dhimmis and wanted to capture Constantinople.

The presenter argues in favor of the Trinity, liturgical worship and icons on the basis of the Old Testament. He also believes that the Muslim view of the Bible is inconsistent at best. Also includes some discussion on who is a true prophet.

Note also the criticism of Alt Right (?) people considering conversion to Islam “based” or “trad”.

Lorentz Ether Theory goes full Kalam

A criticism of Christian apologist William Lane Craig from atheist YouTuber DJW. I don´t consider it entirely convincing, tbh. The link below goes to Wiki´s article on Lorentz Ether Theory.

Lorentz Ether Theory

Quisling

How isn´t this treason or something?

Why creationism is almost certainly wrong

Credit: @cos_nightsky_ (at Twitter)

Young Earth Creationism (YEC) is a very extreme position to take. I know that YECs get angry when their position is compared to flat earthism, but YEC *is* similar in many ways to the flat earth position. In order to uphold YEC, you essentially have to deny *all* science (not just macro-evolution), since there is literally *no* evidence that the Earth and the entire universe is only 6,000 years old – something even YECs sometimes admit. No evidence, that is, except for a literal reading of the Bible, which does indeed strongly suggest a date of creation circa 4,000 BC (although even this can be questioned). YECs also sometimes admit that God must have created the world with an apparent age, but that´s just another way of saying that all scientific evidence points to it being older than those 6,000 years.

The position is theologically problematic, too. If God created the universe with an apparent age, isn´t he intentionally deceitful and hence not all-loving? To this, YECs would respond that God gave us the correct age in the Bible. But this leads to a different problem: God doesn´t seem all-powerful if he is constrained by the problem of apparent age when creating a physical world. The God of young earth creationism surprisingly often comes across as quasi-deist…

Of course, there is also the question of the credibility of the Bible. On a plain reading, the Bible certainly contains a lot of contradictions or “Bible difficulties”. Add to that the existence of divergent manuscript traditions, different ways of translating the Hebrew (or even parsing the words!), and the existence of “lost books” which at one time were considered part of the canon. Archeology strongly suggests that the Bible isn´t even reliable as a historical chronicle (although this is a somewhat complex issue). Many of the previously mentioned contradictions cannot be wished, exegeted or harmonized away. They truly are the result of conflicting agendas of different Biblical writers or editors. At the very least, they testify to Biblical religion being ever-changing. In sum, there is no reason to believe that the Bible is anything else than a fallible human book recording purported divine revelation (and perhaps real spiritual experiences, the ontological status of which is unclear). And while science is of course also a fallible enterprise, it surely must mean *something* that no method of dating the age of Earth or the universe (not even those proposed by YECs) gives the desired result of a date of creation circa 4004 BC. The position is simply absurd.

Old Earth Creationism (OEC) has its own problems. It was possible to be an “intellectually fulfilled old earth creationist” still during the 19th century, but hardly today, when our knowledge of the fossil record is much richer. OEC must essentially assert the following: first, God created a fish ex nihilo, then he waited millions of years until he created a fish with some amphibian characteristics ex nihilo, then he waited another million years to create an amphibian with some fish-like traits (ex nihilo) and finally also an amphibian. But why on earth would God create every species out of nothing and then arrange them in a chronological evolutionary sequence? This once again points to deception or even capriciousness (why did God suddenly destroy the non-avian dinosaurs?). It´s easier to believe that an all-powerful deity simply programs or directs evolution – that, after all, is what we see in the fossil record.

The Discovery Institute and the Intelligent Design (ID) movement has problems of its own. For instance, they have never launched a scientific research program into ID. But such a program should be possible to launch, at least in principle. Even if the divine creation of the designs is forever mysterious, the implementation of those designs in the physical world (most ID advocates are OECs) should be open to scientific investigation. However, it would probably be a very heterodox form of science, perhaps involving a search for astral bodies, morphogenetic fields, or pre-existent spirits. Perhaps the ID movement shies away from this since it would also be very heterodox and “occult” as theology!

Another problem with ID are the metaphors used to describe creation – or are they even metaphors? These are based on computer science, in which bits of “information” are downloaded into matter, or downloaded as matter. But why assume God is a computer geek? This is a late modern conception and therefore cannot be taken seriously, anymore than Paley´s metaphor of the watchmaker, which was obviously based on early modern technology. Note also the similarity between the information obsession of IDs and the explicitly super-computer-fixation of the trans-humanists.

None of the above means that we know everything about evolution. We probably don´t. Perhaps we will never know. Or perhaps we simply haven´t found the right metaphors yet!

Really existing

If the present COVID-related crisis continues, the statement below will become true.

Really existing scientists have done more to discredit science, than really existing socialists ever did to discredit socialism. When the Soviet bloc collapsed in 1989-91, millions of people continued calling themselves socialists, arguing that really existing socialism wasn´t real socialism. But how many people will continue calling themselves pro-science, when really existing science collapses, arguing that wasn´t real science?

Imagine doing more damage to the cause of science than Stalin, Khrushchev or Brezhnev ever did to the cause of socialism!

It´s obviously about unity in the Democrat camp before the midterms, since the "amnesty" explicitly excludes those who "spread misinformation" (i.e. the hard COVID skeptics, presumably here identified with the Republicans).

Personally, I´m willing to "amnesty" anyone and everyone...provided they testify under oath before a Congressional sub-committee and name names!

The real hunt for "Red October"

“The Real Hunt for Red October” is a 2021 US documentary about Tom Clancy, his popular novel “The Hunt for Red October”, the film based on the novel, and certain Cold War incidents which may have inspired the author. Much of the content is speculation. Still, it´s an interesting watch!

In 1968, the Soviet submarine K-129 sunk in the Pacific Ocean, at a location northwest of Hawaii. K-129 had nuclear capability, and had strayed a long way from the usual Soviet patrol area. The Soviet navy attempted to locate the sub, but since it searched in the regular patrol area, failed to do so. This suggests (but doesn´t conclusively prove) that K-129 had “gone rogue”, and that not even the Soviet military knew what the submarine was really up to.

Eventually, the United States located the badly damaged submarine at the bottom of the ocean floor and attempted to salvage it. The salvage operation, which was of course a well kept secret, was organized and financed by the CIA. The agency used “Glomar Explorer”, an ostensible drillship owned by billionaire Howard Hughes, as their cover. In 1974, “Glomar Explorer” managed to retrieve parts of K-129, including the bodies of six dead Soviet crewmembers. In 1975, the US media exposed the project, but the proper authorities declined to comment.

While both Soviets and Americans acknowledge the basic story today (the documentary even shows a film of the burial of the dead Soviet crew), much still remain classified, including the exact location where K-129 sunk. Conspiracy theories abound, and “The Real Hunt for Red October” prominently features Kenneth Sewell, author of the book “Red Star Rogue”, who argues for a scenario even scarier than in Tom Clancy´s novel. Sewell speculates that K-129 had been infiltrated by a secret KGB faction which wanted to launch Chinese-type nuclear missiles against the United States (perhaps Pearl Harbor at Hawaii), thereby tricking the US and China into a nuclear war, with the Soviet Union staying out and eventually taking over the world. This sounds extremely farfetched, to be honest! Still, if K-129 really sunk far outside “its” patrol area, it *is* strange that the Soviets didn´t know about it, searching for the vessel in all the wrong places…

“The Real Hunt for Red October” also speculates about Tom Clancy´s sources. Apparently, his novels contain a lot of classified information. The documentary suggests that somebody in the intelligence community was feeding him material, perhaps as part of a propaganda war against the Soviet Union. The Americans *wanted* the Soviets to know how far ahead the United States were in military technology, and putting such info in popular spy novels was a clever way of “hiding in plain sight”. Ronald Reagan´s Secretary of the Navy, John Lehman, hints at such a possibility when interviewed by the film crew.

Of course, it´s always possible that “The Real Hunt for Red October” is also brokered by some insider faction…

Minority report

The Republican minority of the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions have issued an interim report on the origins of the COVID virus. They reach the conclusion that a lab origin is "likely".

I have no position on the issue, and the GOP obviously have a vested interest in pointing the finger at China, but it annoys me that the official "line" changes all the time, while everyone else is facing censorship...

So I link to this as a kind of political protest (I have previously linked to articles attacking exactly this position).
