The constant failed prophecies about an imminent "rapture" made me think. Did the fundamentalists who promote this kind of stuff actually think that they would be raptured to heaven earlier this week (on Tuesday, I think)?
Or is something else going on here? Maybe the constant rapture-mongering is performative? It´s a form of costly signaling. It signals that you *really* believe in the Christian fundamentalist message. Aye, you believe in it so hard that not even losing money or your house in the event of a failed doomsday prophecy can deter you. Indeed, the more the parousia is delayed, the more important this kind of "apocalypse drills" becomes, lest people grow lukewarm in their faith.
That must be the explanation. Indeed, it would make the rapture-mongering at least a *little* bit rational (after a fashion). If not...well!
