Theodicy

Some Muslim influencers on-line apparently mock the victims of the recent Nepalese floods, claiming that this somehow disproves Hinduism and Buddhism, since their "idols" didn´t protect them against the disasters. Yet, *the very same Muslim accounts* ask for aid to the earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria, to the Palestinians in Gaza, and so on?! So where was Allah when all those Islamic believers were killed...

Unfortunately, the Hindu content-creator sounds "communalist" at the end of his video. Nor does he explain why Vishnu allowed the floods. Still, the bad theodicy (or bad faith?) of his opponents is glaring...

Cosmopolitan

Imagine an Indian kshatriya with a Vaishnava name offering an idol of the Buddha to Isis in a Hellenistic temple in Egypt also used by Bhagavata Hindus. It happened when Egypt was Roman and the Empire had an Arab Caesar. Evidence? Well, we have the idol and the dedication. The latter is in both Greek and Sanskrit.

OK, interesting. I can hear the purists screaming: "Noooo, you´re not allowed to blend different traditions". Try stop me, Karen.

The flight of theurgy to the Alone

No surprises here, but good summary c/o ChatGPT.

How is "salvation" or "liberation" achieved in Neoplatonism (as far as we know)?

Neoplatonism does have something very much like a doctrine of liberation, although its emphasis is on return (epistrophē) rather than on forgiveness of sins or escape from divine judgment. The goal is the soul's return to its divine source, ultimately to the One (to Hen), the absolute principle beyond all being and thought.

The precise details differ somewhat between thinkers like Plotinus, Porphyry, Iamblichus, and Proclus, but the basic pattern is remarkably consistent.

The human condition

According to Plotinus (204/5–270 CE), every soul originates in the intelligible world. It "descends" into the material cosmos, where it becomes preoccupied with bodily life, desires, emotions, and sensory experience.

Importantly, this descent is not exactly a moral fall comparable to the Christian Fall. Rather:

  • the soul becomes distracted by multiplicity,
  • forgets its true nature,
  • identifies itself with the body and ego instead of its higher self.

The soul is therefore alienated from its true home.

One famous Plotinian phrase is:

"The flight of the alone to the Alone."

That summarizes salvation in a single sentence.

The path of return

The ascent occurs through several stages.

1. Ethical purification (katharsis)

The first step is living a virtuous life.

This includes

  • moderation
  • justice
  • courage
  • wisdom
  • freedom from excessive passions

Virtue is not merely moral obedience; it is a process of making the soul resemble its divine origin.

One becomes less ruled by bodily impulses and more governed by reason.

2. Philosophical contemplation

The next stage is intellectual.

The soul turns away from external objects and begins contemplating eternal realities.

Instead of asking

"What do I desire?"

one asks

"What is Beauty itself?"
"What is Justice itself?"
"What is Truth?"

Through philosophy the mind awakens to the realm of Intellect (Nous), where the eternal Forms exist.

3. Interiority

Plotinus repeatedly tells his readers:

"Withdraw into yourself."

Rather than seeking God outside, one discovers that the higher soul is already rooted in the intelligible realm.

This is not introspection in the modern psychological sense.

It is discovering the deepest level of consciousness beyond personality.

4. Contemplation of Nous

The purified intellect eventually comes to contemplate Nous, the Divine Intellect.

At this stage the soul participates in

  • Truth
  • Beauty
  • Wisdom
  • the eternal Forms

Yet even this is not the highest goal.

5. Union with the One

Beyond Intellect lies the One.

The One cannot be grasped by concepts because it is beyond all distinction.

Ultimate liberation occurs in a mystical union called henosis ("oneness" or "union").

Plotinus describes it as

  • beyond thought,
  • beyond subject and object,
  • beyond language.

One does not "know" the One in the ordinary sense.

Rather, one becomes united with it in an ineffable experience.

Plotinus claims to have experienced this several times during his life (according to his student Porphyry).

Is grace involved?

This is an interesting question.

Neoplatonism is often portrayed as entirely self-powered, but that is only partly true.

Plotinus certainly emphasizes personal purification and contemplation.

Yet he also says that union cannot simply be forced by human effort.

The One is always present.

The soul prepares itself, but the actual moment of union comes almost like an unexpected illumination.

Many scholars therefore compare Plotinus' account to later ideas of grace, though Plotinus himself does not develop a theology of divine grace comparable to Christianity.

What role does ritual play?

Here the Neoplatonists disagree.

Plotinus

Plotinus places little emphasis on ritual.

Philosophy, contemplation, and virtue are sufficient.

Porphyry

Porphyry accepts traditional religious practices but still regards philosophy as the highest path.

Iamblichus

Iamblichus makes a major change.

He argues that the human intellect alone cannot ascend to God.

Instead, one requires theurgy ("divine work").

Theurgy involves

  • sacred rituals,
  • prayers,
  • invocations,
  • symbols,
  • consecrated objects,
  • hymns,
  • participation in divine powers.

These rites do not compel the gods but allow the gods to elevate the soul.

This is significantly closer to later sacramental religion than Plotinus' philosophy is.

Proclus

Proclus combines rigorous philosophy with elaborate ritual and theurgy.

For him the universe is filled with divine "chains" (seirai) linking every level of reality to the gods.

By participating in these chains through ritual, contemplation, and virtue, the soul gradually ascends.

Does individuality disappear?

This is debated.

Plotinus describes union as transcending individuality.

However, the soul does not seem permanently cease to exist.

Henosis is generally portrayed as an ecstatic union rather than annihilation.

Unlike some interpretations of Advaita Vedānta, Neoplatonism does not explicitly teach that individual souls are ultimately unreal.

Rather, individuality is surpassed during union while remaining meaningful within the ordered cosmos.

Is reincarnation involved?

Yes.

Most Neoplatonists accepted some form of reincarnation inherited from Plato.

The soul may experience many lives.

The quality of one's next embodiment depends on the state of one's soul.

Liberation ends the cycle of descending into bodily existence.

Comparison with other traditions

There are striking parallels, though also important differences:

TraditionProblemGoalMeans
NeoplatonismForgetfulness of the divine sourceHenosis with the OneVirtue, contemplation, and (for later Neoplatonists) theurgy
Advaita VedāntaIgnorance (avidyā)Realization of BrahmanKnowledge (jñāna) and meditation
Mahāyāna BuddhismIgnorance and attachmentBuddhahood / NirvāṇaWisdom, compassion, meditation
ChristianitySin and separation from GodCommunion with GodDivine grace, faith, virtue, prayer, and the sacraments (depending on tradition)

Among these, Plotinus' vision is often considered especially close in spirit to Advaita Vedānta, although the metaphysical systems differ in significant ways. Later theurgic Neoplatonism (Iamblichus and Proclus) has more in common with ritual traditions such as late antique paganism, certain forms of Hindu Tantra, and esoteric currents in Christianity, in that ritual participation in divine realities complements philosophical contemplation.

Overall, Neoplatonic liberation is best understood as a gradual reorientation of the soul: from attachment to the changing world, to contemplation of eternal realities, and finally to an ineffable union with the One. The journey is not primarily about being pardoned or escaping punishment, but about becoming what one most deeply already is by awakening to one's divine origin.

The Kurdish Question

Interesting. So I suppose the question now is: is Donald Trump more like George Bush senior (who betrayed the Shia and the Kurds at the last moment during the Gulf War) or more like George Bush junior (who finished the job during the Iraq War)? Judging by his actions in Venezuela, the answer is "George Bush senior". So if I would be a Kurdish peshmerga, I would probably need very, very strong "security guarantees" before I enter the fray. Chomsky...again

Overheard on X. A propos our previous discussion on Chomsky. From a xweet by "Chrome Barracuda".

>>>It's ironic that tankies hate Noam Chomsky. Is it because he wasn't unequivocally pro-Stalin, pro-Mao and pro-Soviet Union?

>>>He criticised literally every American foreign policy decision for decades and was extremely pro-Assad, pro-Putin, pro-Serbia, parroting the exact same talking points that Jackson Hinkle and Pax Tube do. That's a harder position than the vast majority of American leftists.

>>>It's hypocritical to idolise the likes of Glenn Greenwald and Jimmy Dore but dismiss Chomsky as subversive. Only in his 90s did he "soften up" and endorse Biden. And even then, he made a huge fuss about how the West triggered the Ukraine war.

Holy war

Trump´s Pravda (Breitbart News) can´t seem to get their agenda straight. The headline and the quote are from two different articles (both dated Nov 6). The first tries to connect the UN and climate activism to jihadism. The second reveals that the jihadi president of Syria will meet with Donald Trump after the climate summit...

LOL.

Regardless of what you think of Trump´s foreign policy, this is some kind of next level sycophancy from his hardcore followers. I assumed these guys were pro-Israeli and anti-Muslim? But listen to them know...

The revenge

A lot of rumours on social media platforms about Syria just now. This seems to be a fairly objective account.

The Alawites are a peculiar Shia Muslim minority the members of which were promoted under the Assad regime, the Assad clan being Alawites themselves. It was probably just a matter of time before the new Sunni overlords of Syria (representing the religious majority) would clash with the defeated Alawites. It seems a pro-Assad resistance group attacked security forces in the coastal region, prompting the Syrian government to move in with fresh troops. These were followed by the usual ragtag militias, seeking rapine and revenge.

At least 1,000 civilian Alawites have been massacred. The Syrian leaders have promised a full investigation, und so weiter. Maybe it will be carried out, maybe not. Probably not, tbh. But sure, in 2025 I´m open to being surprised...

Duly noted

The Kurdish SDF in northern Syria are trying to reach an accommodation with the new Syrian government, while still jockeying for US support. Good luck with the latter! Apparently, the genocidal terrorist cult ISIS are still around at the Syrian-Iraqi border...

Endgame in Palestine?

Are we finally approaching the endgame?

Fatah (which controls the Palestinian Authority) is clearly no longer interested in forming a coalition government with Hamas, instead blaming the destruction in Gaza on them and Iran. Fatah is also trying to suppress pro-Hamas networks on the West Bank. Presumably, Fatah has broken with China (which negotiated a coalition agreement between them and Hamas) and is moving closer to the United States.

With Trump as US president, Israel will have all the resources it needs to fight the Hamas terrorists in Gaza. It therefore makes sense for Fatah to jockey for the position of post-war overlords over the territory. The reactions from Syria and Turkey might be interesting.

Unfaithful

A short addendum to my blog post "Suspicions". It struck me that Russia has dumped two long-term allies in the Transcaucasus and the Middle East: Armenia and the Baathist regime in Syria. In return, they have gained new allies which are surely more fickle: Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey.

Not sure if that´s the best Machiavellian power move. Sometimes, faithfulness pays.

But then, I´m not Vladimir Putin´s advisor. :P

Suspicions

The new leadership of Syria has indicated that they want continuing good relations with Russia, and that the Russian military can keep its bases in the country. Since the rebels overthrew a Russian-backed regime, that´s somewhat surprising...or maybe not.

It confirms my suspicions that Putin made a deal with Turkey´s president Erdogan about a swift transition of power in Syria, back-stabbing Bashar Assad in the process. The reason obviously being that Russia wants to concentrate on the war in Ukraine. Propping up the Baathist regime was apparently too costly. If the Russian military can nevertheless keep its bases in Syria, Putin can still have some leverage in the Middle East. The bases are apparently also used as transit points to Africa, where Russia has expanded its influence in recent years.

A pro-Turkish/Islamist Syria still somehow backed by Russia could become a dangerous enemy to Israel, which may also explain a thing or two. Israel has de facto defeated Hamas but has now gotten a new and presumably Hamas-friendly neighbor at its northern  border...

Turkey´s NATO membership looks more and more like a bizarre anachronism. How long can the United States permit Erdogan to do backroom deals with Putin and expand the quasi-Ottoman Empire to the Israeli borders? The best "solution" (such as it is) to this problem is presumably to continue US support for the Kurdish SDF in northern Syria.

For his part, Trump has said that the United States should stay out of Syria, but that guy can say whatever. Let´s see if the geopolitical realities will come back to bite him in the ass!

Alawite dawn, Alawite dusk

Two interesting threads on Syria on X, believe it or not! Note that the Assad family were themselves Alawites. The Alawites are a small Shia Muslim sect whose members have historically been poor and oppressed.

American "isolationism" on Syria really means letting Erdogan turn the country into a Protektorat.

The correct approach is to support the Kurdish SDF to balance the Islamists and pro-Turkish forces. You know, like the US did under both Obama and Trump Mark 1, until the Donald had a fallout with the Kurds...

Kids, learn basick geopolitix.

Fria Tider säger att "al-Qaida" tagit makten i Syrien. Undrar varför Fria Tider är mot al-Qaida. Egentligen.

Uppfattat.

Waiting for the next strongman

So the Syrian rebel alliance has captured Damascus. Its main components seem to be the Islamist HTS and the pro-Turkish but presumably secular SNA. The SNA is already fighting the Kurdish-dominated SDF in northern Syria. Apparently, ISIS has re-emerged as well somewhere in the northern part of the country...

What will happen now? Nobody knows, but of course it won´t be a democracy.

This is anecdotal, but I never met a Syrian who supported "democracy". Some Syrians I met supported both father and son Assad, others only supported the father, regarding the son as a freakin´ idiot. Still others didn´t support the Baathist regime at all...but were skeptical against liberal democracy anyway. The Syrians I spoke to comprised both Muslims, Christians and atheists.

I suppose we´re all waiting for the next strongman.

Welcome to the chaos

The Syrian Civil War rekindles, and is even more complex than before. The article below is from a Ukrainian newspaper. It states that Ukraine´s intelligence services have been training the rebel forces (many of whom are Islamists) fighting the Syrian army in Aleppo. The Syrian military and the Assad regime are backed by Russia.

But note that the rebels are also sponsored by Turkey, usually seen as an almost-ally of Russia in other theatres! So in Syria, Russia and Turkey are enemies...while Turkey and Ukraine are friends?! To make the situation even more complex, the "SDF" (really the Kurdish YPG or PKK) have attacked Aleppo from the east. But the SDF are anti-Turkish...

Oh, and both Hamas (pro-Turkish/pro-rebel) and Hizbollah (anti-Turkish/pro-Assad) are sponsored by Iran against Israel and the United States.

I wish Marco Rubio and Jared Kushner good luck at their new jobs.
