The Young Turks (TYT) on the Melania Trump situation. Developing?

The Melania

Melania Trump´s unexpected speech on Jeffrey Epstein has been spun by the mainstream media as simply a denial that she had anything to do with him or his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell. But as perennial gadfly Michael Tracey points out on X, the really weird part is that the First Lady is calling on Congress to launch a new investigation into the Epstein files! This despite the fact that Donald Trump wants everyone to drop the entire issue. Is the POTUS trying to distract attention from the seeming Iran debacle by re-opening the Epstein case? That would be...richly ironic.

Tracey´s xweets below.

This is gobsmacking. Not only did Melania Trump suddenly decide to give a televised address about Jeffrey Epstein, she's calling on Congress to "act," because Epstein was "not alone." So she just threw a giant stick of political dynamite on the issue her husband despises!

I don't know about you, but my head is still spinning over this Melania speech. WTF! Sure, there are photos of her consorting with Jeffrey and Ghislaine over the years, and maybe a fleeting email here or there, but has she ever really been THAT big of a focal point in the speculation? (Because now she definitely WILL BE...) She denied wrongdoing. What wrongdoing was she ever even accused of? Did anyone notice that while she was at it, she could've declared that her husband also didn't do anything wrong, but conspicuously chose not to...? Why suddenly make a televised statement on Epstein this afternoon -- apparently without Donald's knowledge -- calling for Congressional action and public "survivor" testimony, because, she claims, Epstein did not "act alone"? Donald has always been adamant that he feels the country should move on from Epstein. It's certainly not something he feels should warrant any further political or legislative attention. But... that's exactly what Melania just called for! So again, WTF!

There are conflicting opinions and reports about whether Melania chose to deliver this gobsmacking Epstein Speech with or without the consent, or knowledge, of Donald. One report suggests Donald was given a "heads up." But this could just be something like: "Heads up, Melania is about to give a speech." Doesn't necessarily mean Donald was involved in the planning of it. He could've simply been told about it at the last minute. Other reports suggest he had no knowledge that his wife was about to speak on Epstein, and call for renewed political action on the matter. So this at least appears to have been the personal initiative of Melania. Still, speculation will abound that it was plotted out in concert with Donald. Even though this would blatantly contradict Donald's repeat admonitions that everyone should forget about Epstein, and concern about the Epstein Files is a "hoax" cooked up by Democrats, as well as a cohort of "stupid" Republicans. Though of course Donald is not above contradicting himself, and is in fact becoming increasingly erratic/volatile, this would certainly be an all-time Whopper of a contradiction. For now, we simply don't know what gave rise to the Melania Epstein Speech, which is what makes this episode so gobsmacking.

Body double

Jeffrey Epstein has a doppelgänger, known as Palm Beach Pete. And yes, the body double is *literally mentioned in the Epstein Files*...

You can´t make this shit up.

Enforcement theater

A far right(?) opponent of mass immigration into the United States is unhappy with the ICE raids in Minnesota, arguing that Republican-run states have a substantially larger problem with illegal aliens. However, corporate profits depend on them, so no action is ever taken there. The author calls ICE´s actions in the North Star State "enforcement theater" and "culture war".

Is everyone turning on the Donald?

ICE Minnesota raid is pure theater

Drunk as a skunk?

A discussion on the famed photos of a supposed "Skunk Ape" in Florida (the local version of Bigfoot). Apparently, they were originally sent to the police together with an anonymous letter. The police didn´t take the case seriously. The background is seldom mentioned in books on cryptozoology. Ths YouTube channel suspects it´s all a hoax.

Bellwether counties

???!!! Scott Carney believes that the Trump campaign stole the 2024 POTUS elections by manipulating the computer software. Some of the counties reporting election results *don´t even exist*. Yes: phantom counties?!

Of course, Trump supporters believe that the large number of (very real) "bellwether counties" switching to Biden in 2020 proves *those* elections were rigged.

Still, fake counties is surely a new one!

Character witness

Noam Chomsky had close ties with Jeffrey Epstein. Here is a kind of pro-Chomsky defense, written by contrarian blogger Michael Tracey, the leading "Epstein Files skeptic". Also mentions Bannon...

Why did Bannon and Chomsky love Epstein so much?

Emmanuel, don´t do it!

I know this is silly, but I can´t help myself linking to it. I never actually seen an emu IRL. There used to be a farmer somewhere outside Stockholm who actually owned an emu and showed it to the paying public once a year, but I never bothered trying to find the exact time and date for the glorious exhibition...

Corn syrup and immigration

Credit: Ton Rulkens

So I asked the robot to comment this week´s strangest news item. Yes, that would be Trump´s proud announcement that the Coca Cola Company (at the God-Emperor´s prodding, mind you) will stop sweeten Coke Classic with corn syrup, instead using real sugar from sugarcane. Eh?

Sugarcane is grown in the southern states, where many people support Trump. But...what about immigrant labor at the sugarcane plantations? And what´s up with the corn syrup situation anyway? My guess is that RFK Jr and his "MAHA" movement may be behind this, since I assume they oppose said syrup.

However, more sugarcane production will presumably also make it necessary to import more cheap labor from Mexico and Central America. Unless the MAHA-ites want to lift and then volunteer their working class muscle down at the latifundia...

Do sugar cane plantations in the South use labor from Mexico?

Yes, many sugarcane farms in the U.S. South—especially in states like Florida and Louisiana—do use labor from Mexico, but the situation is more nuanced and varies by region and employer.

🇺🇸 U.S. Sugarcane Labor Overview

1. Mexican Migrant Labor

  • A significant portion of seasonal sugarcane workers in the South are Mexican nationals.

  • Many are brought to the U.S. through the H-2A visa program, which allows agricultural employers to hire foreign workers temporarily when there are not enough local laborers.

  • These workers typically perform manual cutting, planting, weeding, and harvesting, especially in Louisiana, which still relies partly on hand-harvested cane.

2. Florida (Heavily Mechanized)

  • In Florida, sugarcane harvesting is now largely mechanized—machines cut most of the cane.

  • However, Mexican and Central American workers are still employed in:

    • Planting

    • Field preparation

    • Maintenance

    • Milling operations

  • They often work under contracts with large companies (e.g., U.S. Sugar, Florida Crystals).

3. Louisiana (Still Some Manual Cutting)

  • Louisiana relies more heavily on manual labor for certain stages of harvesting and field prep.

  • Mexican H-2A workers are widely used during the harvest season.

  • Labor shortages have made growers more dependent on foreign guest workers.

🧾 Labor Rights & Controversies

There have been ongoing debates around:

  • Pay levels and working conditions for H-2A workers.

  • Access to healthcare and housing during seasonal work.

  • Exploitation or legal gray areas with subcontractors or recruiters.

Several reports and labor watchdogs have raised concerns, particularly regarding wage disputes and unsafe working environments.

Is there a criticism against using corn syrup from consumer rights groups and such?

Yes, there is significant criticism of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) from a range of consumer rights groups, health organizations, and nutrition advocates. The criticism centers on health concerns, labeling transparency, and industrial agricultural practices. Here's a breakdown:

⚠️ 1. Health-Related Criticisms

a. Obesity & Metabolic Issues

  • HFCS has been linked—controversially—to the rise in obesity and type 2 diabetes in the U.S.

  • Groups like the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) and Public Health Advocacy Institute argue that HFCS contributes to overconsumption of sugar in processed foods and beverages.

b. Fructose Metabolism

  • Unlike glucose, fructose is metabolized primarily in the liver, which can lead to fat buildup and insulin resistance.

  • Some studies have associated high fructose intake with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and elevated triglycerides.

c. "Empty Calories"

  • Consumer health advocates argue HFCS provides no nutritional value beyond calories, and encourages the consumption of sugary, processed foods over whole foods.

🧾 2. Labeling and Transparency Concerns

  • HFCS often appears under different names like “corn sugar”, which can confuse consumers.

  • In 2012, the FDA rejected a petition by the corn industry to rename HFCS as “corn sugar,” citing misleading labeling.

  • Critics claim food labeling lacks clear distinctions between cane/beet sugar and corn syrup, which undermines informed consumer choice.

🌽 3. Industrial Agriculture & Environmental Impact

  • HFCS depends on large-scale corn monoculture, which requires:

    • Heavy fertilizer and pesticide use

    • Government subsidies (taxpayer-funded support of corn)

  • Environmental groups (like the Environmental Working Group) criticize this model for contributing to:

    • Soil degradation

    • Water pollution (from nitrogen runoff)

    • Reduced biodiversity

🏷️ 4. Market & Consumer Pushback

  • Starting in the late 2000s, there was a consumer backlash against HFCS.

  • Many companies (e.g., Snapple, Heinz ketchup, Gatorade) began marketing products with labels like “no high-fructose corn syrup.”

  • Some health-conscious consumers see HFCS as a marker of “ultra-processed” or low-quality food.

📊 Scientific Consensus?

  • Major health organizations like the American Medical Association (AMA) and FDA have stated that HFCS and table sugar (sucrose) are nutritionally similar when consumed in moderation.

  • However, they also acknowledge excessive sugar intake of any kind is unhealthy.

🟨 So while HFCS may not be uniquely toxic, critics argue that it encourages overconsumption due to its low cost and prevalence in processed foods.

✅ Summary of Criticisms

HealthLinks to obesity, diabetes, liver problems
LabelingLack of transparency, misleading names
EnvironmentIndustrial corn farming harms ecosystems
Consumer rightsReduced choice, hard-to-avoid in processed foods

Fast food

- Yes, they are still eating cheeseburgers!

I have no idea whether this is good, bad or indifferent. Or just a conflict between different special interest groups. But...it does look rather silly to ban fake meat while *not* banning fast food! I mean, what´s up with that?

Montana bans fake meat

Florida forever?

John Campbell actually supports the current process in Florida to ban chemtrails. The reason? The connection to geoengineering, including "solar dimming". Interesting angle.

What on earth are they *legislating*?

¨

This law was recently approved by the Florida state senate. I´m old enough to remember when this was a Bircher-related conspiracy theory. I assume somebody somewhere realized that the "chemtrail" issue can be used to further climate change denialism. And here we are...

State lawmakers are moving to ban non-existent "chemtrails"

Allegedly

Ryan Wesley Routh, who *allegedly* tried to kill Donald Trump at that golf course, is *allegedly* an Iranian asset. Thank god Israel *allegedly* incapacitated the entire Iranian air force last year, so Trump doesn´t non-allegedly have to nuke Qom or something...

Check mate

So Romania arrests the pro-Russian presidential candidate, shortly after the anti-Russian president resigns, while allowing Andrew Tate to leave the country? Tate is on his way to...Florida. And guess who lives in Florida?

Is this some kind of 4D chess+++ from the Romanian government?
