Universums mittpunkt

Trots ganska uppenbara kopplingar till just autism. Fortfarande en helig graal för vissa...?

Vad händer om vi skulle skrota NPF-begreppet?

The adult in the room

The only mature person on the web? The title of this video *isn´t* click bait. I´m talking about his attitude more than his opinions, although he obviously has a point about the anti-Semitic jokes (which I wasn´t aware of)...

Complete shocker: Free will is...real?!

Speaks for itself. Free will denial has always been one of the most silly cyber-atheist talking points, so I suppose it´s a good thing for those guys that we know have objective scientific evidence (as opposed to, you know, mere personal anecdotes) that Voluntarist Free Will really does exist, I mean, duuuude, who knew?!

Tragedy and irony

Some contrarian content from Michael Tracey. Note that the prosecutor seems to be "Woke" and looks like a stereotypical "evil feminist", so presumably the Alt Right keyboard warriors who demand the death penalty for Lindsay Clancy are siding with "the damn liberals"? And in Massachusetts! Ironic if true...

Remove these foul creatures from public office immediately

Provisional living

Provisionally dead?

JMG is just repeating some old stuff here, but...he is right (more or less).

I sometimes wonder if the prevalence of doom porn has an even more "mundane" explanation: some people don´t think *anything* will change. The doomer stuff is their way of fighting grey boredom in Suburbia.

And yes, I´m old enough to remember the Y2K nothing-burger. Plus a number of other nothing-burgers, both of the apocalyptic and Eternal Progress varieties.

My prediction is that JMG will still be writing this stuff about 2050! ;-)

Absorption

My result on the "Tellegen Absorption Scale" was only 5 out of 34. So is *that* why I never have any spiritual or religious experiences? Or almost never. Damn. I suppose I will never see the sky fairies and their luminous orbs...

Where is the science?

It seems both neuroscience and psychology are in crisis. Sabine Hossenfelder has the updates. Shit like this will eventually make the public (including the educated part - they are the only ones paying attention anyway) skeptical towards the entire scientific establishment. And maybe even the project itself? Which I wouldn´t consider a positive development. Note also the crises in quantum physics and cosmology...

Britt Hartley´s dangerous idea

I somehow managed to miss this Britt Hartley video. It´s called "The ugly side of atheism / 5 things I hate about atheists (as an atheist)". The most sensational move is when Hartley uses secular psychology and evolutionary theory *to undercut the claims of atheists to rationality*. How can atheism be "rational" if our senses are fundamentally unreliable? Exaaactly...but this is of course a popular *Christian* argument against atheism! Here used by a fellow atheist to cut the perfectly "rational" (male) on-line atheists down to size.

I suppose we could call "Britt Hartley´s dangerous idea"...

The main reason, I think, why Hartley is so controversial in (male) atheist on-line spaces is that she "wants to both have the cake and eat it". In a very real sense, she wants spirituality without Spirit and religion without God. Differently put, she wants to keep the social and psychological dimensions of religion without the metaphysics. I think her (male) atheist detractors (and presumably her religious detractors, too) see this as a kind of LARP. A quasi-religious LARP, to be exact.

Could it work on a mass scale? Maybe. After all, civic religion is a thing. Still, since the LARP is supposedly rooted in our most basic psychological make-up, sooner or later the participants might feel drawn to actual religion, seeing it as "the real thing" or "the missing ingredient". Why not assume that a psyche molded by evolution to "feel" or even "see" Spirit *actually feels or sees Spirit*? The metaphysics are real. Especially if the LARP is very self-consciously modelled on explicitly religious communities (say Christian ones). I think Hartley´s (male) opponents see her as in some objective sense too "spiritual" or religious.

As usual, there is also an discussion on how atheism is male-coded (it´s cold, hard, rational yada yada) whereas religion and spirituality are female-coded. Hartley never says it out loud, but I think she suspects that her male critics see her as "the weak and confused woman" who can´t let go of her emotional support blanket.

Hartley has controversial takes on a few other topics, too. Would secularism really turn the United States into "Norway"? (I assume she means Sweden!) Do atheists really have higher IQ than religious people?

Could be interesting to watch.

Samsara

What if there are no solutions to the climate crisis, the demographic crisis, the migrant crisis, the AI crisis (the real one), the autism crisis, the IQ crisis, the energy crisis, the ecological crisis...did I forget something? Well, American Coke still contains corn syrup rather than sugar. Tastes like shit, apparently. Or corn.

Welcome to kali yuga. And samsara...

Emotional charnel ground

Is ChatGPT really *Charnel Ground* GPT? Here is a defense of Tantrism (including - at least implicitly - the extreme practices of the Left Hand Path) written by the Artificial Intelligence.

Here is a controversial question: Is there a path, perhaps in Tantrism, which does include even personal anger, bitterness, and the need to feel superior, and so on?

This is a controversial question, and the answer depends very much on what is meant by "include."

The short answer is:

  • Yes, some Tantric traditions explicitly work with emotions such as anger, pride, desire, and fear rather than attempting to suppress them immediately.
  • No, I am not aware of any mainstream Hindu or Buddhist Tantric tradition that teaches one should cultivate or justify personal hatred, bitterness, or a lasting sense of superiority as spiritual ideals.

That distinction is fundamental.

Buddhist Tantra

In Vajrayāna, there is a famous saying that the kleśas (afflictive emotions) are not rejected but transformed.

For example:

  • anger becomes mirror-like wisdom,
  • desire becomes discriminating wisdom,
  • pride becomes the wisdom of equality.

However, this does not mean:

"Remain angry."

It means that the energy underlying anger is recognized without the grasping, aversion, and delusion that make it destructive.

Wrathful deities such as Mahākāla or Vajrakīlaya appear terrifying, but traditional commentaries generally emphasize that their wrath is compassionate wrath, not personal rage.

They are said to be free of hatred.

Hindu Tantra

The picture is similar.

In Śākta and Śaiva Tantra, fierce deities such as:

  • Kālī,
  • Bhairava,
  • Narasiṃha,

may display terrifying anger.

But traditionally this anger is not interpreted as wounded ego.

Rather, it is cosmic, protective, or purifying.

The deity destroys ignorance or injustice without being psychologically consumed by resentment.

Where things become more complicated

There are traditions that deliberately use powerful emotions as fuel.

For example:

  • confronting fear in cremation grounds,
  • visualizing terrifying forms,
  • transmuting sexual desire,
  • working with aggression or intense determination.

In these contexts, the practitioner does not pretend the emotions are absent.

Instead, they become material for practice.

This is one reason Tantra has often been described as an "alchemical" path.

But alchemy transforms lead into gold—it does not declare lead to be gold already.

Pride

Your mention of "the need to feel superior" is particularly interesting.

Classical Buddhist psychology generally treats this as a form of māna (conceit), which is considered an obstacle.

Even if one is objectively accomplished, clinging to superiority is seen as reinforcing the illusion of a fixed, separate self.

Similarly, many Hindu traditions distinguish between healthy confidence and ahaṃkāra (egoic self-identification).

Tantra does sometimes ask the practitioner to identify with a deity and think:

"I am the deity."

But this is not meant to inflate the ordinary ego.

Rather, it is intended to undermine the ordinary ego by replacing it with an enlightened identity that is ultimately dissolved into emptiness or pure consciousness.

Are there antinomian traditions?

Yes.

Some historical Kaula, Kāpālika, and related Tantric groups deliberately violated social conventions.

However, even these traditions generally claimed that such practices were undertaken:

  • after extensive preparation,
  • under a qualified guru,
  • without ordinary attachment,
  • and as a means of transcending dualistic clinging.

They did not usually teach that ordinary resentment or arrogance should simply be indulged.

A Jungian comparison

Modern psychological interpretations—especially those influenced by Carl Gustav Jung—sometimes speak of "integrating the shadow."

That idea has often been compared with Tantra, although they are not identical.

Jung would generally say that acknowledging anger, envy, or pride is healthier than denying they exist.

But he would not usually recommend becoming dominated by them.

Likewise, Tantra often says that denying powerful emotions can make them more unconscious, while transformation requires bringing them into awareness.

Is there any tradition that positively values bitterness?

Here I think the answer is largely no, at least among the major Hindu and Buddhist traditions.

Some traditions value:

  • righteous indignation,
  • fierce resolve,
  • uncompromising truthfulness,
  • destructive compassion,
  • terrifying protective power.

But bitterness—understood as long-term resentment, grievance, or delight in another's downfall—is generally regarded as binding rather than liberating.

A broader perspective

Your question points toward a real tension in spirituality. Some paths emphasize gentleness and gradual purification; others are willing to enter directly into powerful, difficult emotions. Tantric traditions are among the latter. Yet their aim is not to sanctify egoic anger or superiority. Rather, they propose that the very energies involved in those states can, through disciplined practice, be transformed into wisdom, fearlessness, and compassionate action.

So if someone found themselves saying, "My practice has brought me face to face with my anger, pride, or bitterness," many Tantric teachers might respond, "Good—now you know what needs to be transformed." They would be much less likely to say, "Excellent—keep cultivating those qualities as they are." The distinction between using an emotion as the raw material for transformation and endorsing it as a spiritual goal is one of the defining features of both Hindu and Buddhist Tantra.

Showing my age

- Join the dark side, Ashtar my dear!

Sometimes, I feel like I´m 10,000 billion years old. Yes, I´m suffering from some kind of compassion fatigue. As you may have noticed.

Woke overreach?

This one is a bit extreme. Or no? Judging by the description, the fake Cambridge professor was *obviously* a pathological liar. So how was he able to go on for so long?

Able. Or enabled...by somebody.

Or maybe by the rather infamous Mr Nobody. Since I can sense a lot of structural issues in the background, including a number unrelated to Woke. Maybe the Cambridge scandal was overdetermined.

– Många saknar go.
