Projecting Greenland

The UN just voted to replace the Mercator projection with some more modern stuff (at least on UN maps). Only the United States voted against, calling it a ridiculous pseudo-issue. Sure, maybe. But this is of course the same Trump administration which renamed the Gulf of Mexico "Gulf of America" and (apparently) also rebaptized Lake Ontario. The pot is calling the kettle black, methinks.

But then it struck me. Greenland is enormously effing large at Mercator world maps. Larger than Africa, in fact. Maybe *that´s* why the POTUS likes this particular projection?

Hmmm...

Loveland, frogland

Bizarre tall tales about large and sometimes dangerous over-sized frogs. Yes, frogs. Cryptid frogs. Dude.

PS. I actually reviewed the book mentioned in the concluding section. Tallest tales ever!

Fantastic beasts and where to find them

Summer is coming

A Super-El Nino is (probably) about to begin and last for about 8 months. So for the next 8 months, climate change denialists will blame all heat waves on the (naturally occuring) Super-El Nino. Climate activists won´t say anything, since they are too busy doing pro-Hamas activism.

Between 1876 and 1878, there was a Super-El Nino during which about 60 million people died of famine. But the world looked very different back in 1876-78. I mean, colonial empires oblivious to the plight of the colored man, deficient supply chains, no international aid organizations...

Wait a sec.

Well, yes, sounds a lot like 2026, doesn´t it? But I´m not saying the doom-sayers are right. Probably just another slight turbulence on our way down. Right?

Hard to believe

With all due respecc to this dude (the Catholic content-creator), why is this easier to believe if mentioned in a 2,500 year old scripture? I mean, it obviously doesn´t work, does it?

Trump will save us from Ebola!

Just unleash the power of poly-crisis late capitalism and give us another RNA vaccine, Don! I´m sure your supporters (and RFK Jr) won´t mind at all, LOL.

Fear of a Blaq planet

A propos a previous blog post...

In 100 years, most people will be West Africans freezing half to death in Europe, barely braving heat waves in the Middle East, or drowning in huge floods in North America. Or fighting Kazakhs and Pakistanis somewhere in Asia. Africa will have become uninhabitable by that time.

Prove me wrong.

Elephants have no rights

- Gotta problem with pachyderms, huh huh?

Why animal rights and veganism doesn´t work. The brains of our ancestors (Homo erectus again) became big thanks to hunting and feasting on primordial elephants...

Without "speciesism", no Man. Deal with it.

Human ancestors butchered elephants

DoorDash

This is getting more and more embarrasing by the hour. Look what Iran´s embassy in Ghana just posted. Assuming it´s an authentic account. But it´s reported as such in the mainstream media, so it´s embarrasing for the US anyway.

>>>BREAKING: "Rich Starry," a Chinese oil tanker sanctioned for shipping Iranian oil, flying the flag of Malawi — a country with no coastline — just sailed through America's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The Navy, with its many "big beautiful ships," issued repeated warnings. Reportedly, the tanker's captain upgraded to premium to skip the ads.

>>>EDIT: We're being told the blockade only applies to countries the US isn't afraid of. That list used to be long. It now fits on Trump's McDonald's receipt, delivered by DoorDash.

Apokalypsis

I just saw a triumphalist Christian video pointing out that Muslim birth rates are falling. Which isn´t even true, since they are still far above replacement level in many Muslim nations. Now, do Christian nations...

Exactly.

The forgotten branch

The quest for the only true religion continues...

This is a long presentation (taped on location in Oman) about Ibadism, the "forgotten" third branch of Islam alongside Sunnism and Shiism. Ibadism is the dominant form of Islam in the Sultanate of Oman at the Arabian peninsula.

The Ibadis were originally something as strange as the moderate faction of the Kharijites (the "anarchists" or "ultras" of the Muslim world). Their most important doctrine was that Muslims who commit major sins or even repeated minor sins aren´t really Muslims and should therefore be excluded from the umma. This even goes for the imams - unless he is sinless, the imam can´t be a legitimate ruler. This marked the Ibadis out from both the Sunnis and the Shias. The former believed that even sinful rulers should be obeyed for pragmatic reasons, while the latter denied that imams could sin at all. It seems the purist attitude was balanced with a more tolerant-pragmatic one in practice, which distinguished the Ibadis from the Azariqa, the militant Kharijites who believed that all "Muslim" sinners should be killed?!

Today, the tolerant and supposedly peaceful side of Ibadism is emphasized, with Oman having freedom of worship for various immigrant communities and also for the Sunni and the Shia. However, the video says relatively little about modern Omani history, perhaps because it isn´t particularly "tolerant". Oman is an absolute monarchy and it´s interesting to note that the Sultanate was often in political or even military conflict with the Imamate, despite both nominally being Ibadis. The British Empire and the black gold (you know, oil) lurks in the background...

Still, an interesting contribution.

Antecessors

- Why weren´t we mentioned in
your peer reviewed paper, huh?

Some recent revisions of our bushy family tree. However, the main lines of evolution are still clear. So our direct ancestor wasn´t Lucy, but some *other* ape-woman? Go figure. But sure, the skeletal remains at Dmanisi need to be sorted out, I think!

Last common ancestor of modern humans and Neanderthals possibly found

Homo erectus not the first human to leave Africa

"Lucy" was not our direct ancestor

So isolationism works?

Does this mean that "isolationism" works, after all?

Indigenous lineage persisted for 8,500 years

Ancient humans in southern Africa were isolated for 100,000 years

Ancient humans stayed around rock shelter for 9,000 years

Impossible ecologies

This is kind of obvious, but since ChatGPT said it, it´s now Revealed Truth as well. Bigfoot (at least if taken to be a flesh-and-blood animal or manimal) simply *can´t* exist. It´s ecologically impossible. Nor can they hide from modern science (or hunters) for centuries. Especially not if they are supposed to live pretty much everywhere!

Explain why large mammals are hard to hide.

Large mammals are hard to hide not because scientists are unimaginative, but because biology leaves unavoidable, cumulative traces. Once an animal passes a certain size and population threshold, its existence becomes ecologically loud, even if it is shy, nocturnal, or lives in remote terrain.

Here’s the logic step by step.

1. Large mammals require breeding populations

A single animal proves nothing biologically. For a species to persist:

  • You need hundreds to thousands of individuals (minimum viable population)

  • They must reproduce continuously

  • They must be distributed across suitable habitat

This immediately multiplies evidence:

  • Births

  • Deaths

  • Dispersal

  • Genetic diversity

A hidden species would still leave many bodies over time.

2. Bodies don’t vanish: bones, teeth, DNA

Large mammals inevitably leave:

  • Skeletons

  • Teeth (the most durable mammalian tissue)

  • Hair

  • Scat

  • Environmental DNA (eDNA) in soil and water

Key point:

We routinely find bones of rare, elusive animals — even those thought extinct.

Examples:

  • Wolverine remains in low-density populations

  • Snow leopard bones in extreme terrain

  • Saola remains before live sightings were common

For Bigfoot-scale mammals:
❌ No verified bones
❌ No teeth
❌ No uncontested DNA

This is decisive.

3. Large mammals alter ecosystems

Big animals reshape environments simply by living:

  • They consume large quantities of food

  • They trample vegetation

  • They create trails

  • They compete with other species

  • They influence predator–prey dynamics

Ecologists detect species indirectly all the time:

  • Through browse lines

  • Through prey population changes

  • Through parasite networks

A North American hominid would dramatically affect:

  • Deer populations

  • Plant communities

  • Carnivore competition

None of this is observed.

4. Energy economics: big bodies are expensive

Large mammals need:

  • Lots of calories

  • Large home ranges

  • Reliable food sources

This forces:

  • Repeated visits to feeding areas

  • Predictable patterns

  • Detectable impact

Even animals that actively avoid humans (e.g., grizzlies, mountain gorillas) are still:

  • Regularly photographed

  • Killed accidentally

  • Found dead

  • Sampled genetically

You can’t “ghost” your way around thermodynamics.

5. Human detection is now overwhelming

Modern landscapes are saturated with detection:

  • Trail cameras (millions worldwide)

  • Drones

  • Satellites

  • Hunters

  • Hikers

  • Road networks

  • Forestry and mining

  • eDNA surveys

Even extremely rare species are detected:

  • Amur leopards (~100 individuals)

  • Javan rhinos (~70)

  • Cross River gorillas (~300)

All are better documented than Bigfoot.

6. “But forests are vast” — a scale illusion

Yes, forests are large. But:

  • They are fragmented

  • Heavily monitored

  • Ecologically mapped

  • Regularly entered by humans

Large mammals don’t need to be seen often — just once, clearly.

Bigfoot has had:

  • ~70 years

  • Tens of thousands of observers

  • Zero conclusive biological specimens

That’s not a mystery; it’s a negative result.

7. Historical pattern: how real discoveries happen

When genuinely unknown large mammals are found:

  • Local people already hunt them

  • Physical remains exist

  • Western science is late, not clueless

Examples:

  • Mountain gorillas (bones known before live study)

  • Okapi (skins and skulls first)

  • Saola (skulls found before camera footage)

Bigfoot has skipped every step of this pattern.

Bottom line

Large mammals are hard to hide because life leaves evidence.

Not just sightings — but bones, DNA, ecological footprints, and population dynamics.

Bigfoot fails not because it’s implausible in principle, but because it is ecologically impossible in practice given modern detection and 70+ years of searching.

If you want, I can:

  • Compare Bigfoot to plausible undiscovered species (small, aquatic, subterranean)

  • Explain why marine cryptids are more plausible than terrestrial ones

  • Analyze Bigfoot belief using cognitive science or religious phenomenology

Just tell me where you want to go next.

Owned

I´ve heard this argument all my life, including from "liberals" and leftists. Somebody on X knows the implications...
