I sometimes wonder if the prevalence of doom porn has an even more "mundane" explanation: some people don´t think *anything* will change. The doomer stuff is their way of fighting grey boredom in Suburbia.
And yes, I´m old enough to remember the Y2K nothing-burger. Plus a number of other nothing-burgers, both of the apocalyptic and Eternal Progress varieties.
My prediction is that JMG will still be writing this stuff about 2050! ;-)

Jokes aside, the Russian government is apparently under the influence of a maverick believer in the existence of infinite oil. They will finance deep drilling in Komi to see if the hypothesis can be sustained (pun intended). If abiogenic oil exists in large quantities, the Russian Federation can finally (re)claim its rightful place under the sun. Or at least above the fuel reserves.
Sabine is skeptical, since "everyone" has been looking for the elusive non-fossil oil for decades (around Lake Siljan in Sweden, for instance - not mentioned in the video) and came up short. One aspect she doesn´t discuss is the impact on our climate if abiogenic oil would be found in enormous amounts too cheap to meter. But sure, maybe the good people of Komi could need some long hot summers to grow Lysenkoite water melons, or whatever.

It´s interesting to note that the United States has become the world´s largest exporter of oil due to the Hormuz crisis. Very interesting indeed. Maybe that´s why finding a solution to the situation isn´t the first priority of this administration...

Apparently, Iran is about to close the Strait of Hormuz. Again. I didn´t realize it was supposed to be open? The reason is Israel´s offensive in Lebanon against Iran´s allies Hizbollah. Again.
So I suppose Vance has to strut all the way to Islamabad again for another round of negotiations with the defeated, overthrown and non-existent Iranian regime...
