A spellbounding transformation

 

Independent reporter Michael Tracey argues that Tulsi Gabbard is super-opportunist even by the standards of US politics. Indeed, her opportunism is almost irrational, since her position within the Trump administration apparently doesn´t come with much power anyway. 

Maybe. But there is one aspect Tracey never mentions. Gabbard is a member of a mysterious religious sect, Science of Identity, led by one Chris Butler. There is no evidence that she is Butler´s intelligencer or infiltrator in Washington DC, but I can´t help wondering. During her political career, Tulsi Gabbard has befriended the DNC, Bernie Sanders, Joe and Jill Biden, and now Donald Trump. Which makes no sense...unless somebody really wants to have (dis)info on everyone in DC.

A more mundane explanation, I suppose, would be that Gabbard is a BJP asset. Her contacts with Hindu nationalists were apparently quite extensive already during her "leftist" period. Perhaps PM Modi uses her as a listening post and lobbyist? Maybe Modi correctly predicted Trump´s victory in 2024 and quietly told Gabbard to support him? 

Of course, there is yet another possibility: Gabbard is crazy. Not in the clinical sense, of course, but in the everyday sense of that term. She´s something of a kook, which explains why she is still a member of Butler´s New Religious Movement (a peculiar breakaway from the Hare Krishna). I admit that I´m kind of weirded out by the Gabbardian situation myself!

Trump wants to appoint Tulsi Gabbard to the position of DNI. 

Not sure what the Director of National Intelligence really does that the CIA or FBI can´t do themselves, but since Gabbard is (as far as I know) still a member of "Science of Identity", I wouldn´t let her near any classified information. How do we know it won´t end up in the hands of Chris Butler?! 

Who, at least according to critics, is a cult leader...

It´s interesting to note that, say, Alt-Right personality Mike Cernovich "predicted" this already in 2016, since he described Gabbard as a "centrist populist" already at a time when she was officially a left-leaning Democrat!

Tulsi Gabbard is a controversial American politician and political commentator whose main claim to fame is probably her 2019-2020 primary election campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination. Gabbard destroyed Kamala Harris´ presidential bid before the voting even started, but as we all know, Harris staged a comeback later. Still, it *is* intriguing that Harris´ attempt to become POTUS in her own right was upset by a “fringe” candidate like Gabbard!

Supposedly a progressive leftist, Gabbard veered rather strongly towards the populist right, eventually leaving the Democratic Party altogether in 2022 for unknown pastures. Judging by the presentations linked above, Gabbard may never have been a leftist at all, and perhaps deliberately prettified her past.

It´s been known for a long time that Gabbard had contacts with Hindu nationalists (she even met Modi). Her Hindu beliefs are derived from a breakaway group from the Hare Krishna movement, known as Science of Identity. Both her parents (not just her mother) are members of Science of Identity, and so is Gabbard herself. The group is based on Hawaii, where the Gabbards live. The founder-leader of this group, Chris Butler, is a really raving homophobe. So is Mark Gabbard, Tulsi´s father, who claims to be a Catholic but is actually a member of Butler´s organization. While it´s not super-secret that Gabbard is somehow connected to Butler´s people, she has tried to downplay both the connection and essentially denied her guru´s homophobia.

The narrator of the videos linked above is a Canadian counter-cultist with somewhat eclectic spiritual beliefs, Henri Jolicoeur. As a very young man, Jolicoeur was a member of the Hare Krishna movement (the ISKCON) and worked closely with none other than Shrila Prabhupada himself. Indeed, he was tasked with spying on Chris Butler´s ISKCON temple in Hawaii! It seems Butler was creating his very own, shall we say, cult following already back then. Yes, Jolicoeur regards Science of Identity as a dangerous cult, prompting Butler´s lawyers to sue him for libel in both Hawaii and Quebec as a result (the present status of the lawsuit is unclear to me). 

The videos are interesting, not just for what they may reveal about Gabbard or Butler, but also due to the narrator´s reminiscences. Judging by other uploads on his channel, Jolicouer knows all of the ISKCON “fallen gurus” who took over the Hare Krishna after Prabhupada´s death…and he despises all of them (or almost all). There is some other interesting info of a counter-cultist nature on the channel too, so stay tuned for more links!

As for Tulsi Gabbard, she did have an intriguing ability to politically attract a rather motley crew of people. Among people who had positive things to say about her were Alt Right cyber-demon and citizen´s reporter Mike Cernovich, pro-populist leftist Jimmy Dore and perennial kind-of-liberal gadfly Michael Tracey (who even endorsed her for president). I was interested in her politics, too, but things change and so on.

This is the infamous clip which forced CNN to cancel Reza Aslan´s entire documentary series. Viewer discretion is strongly advised here! 

Aslan meets a bizarre Tantric cult in India, the Aghori, and makes the mistake of *actually participating in their antinomian rituals*. He eats cremated human brain, and drinks alcohol from a skull, all the while the Aghori sadhus worship Mother Kali. One of the cult members then threaten to kill Aslan unless he shuts up, and starts throwing feces on him and the camera crew! 

As far as I can tell, this isn´t scripted. The Aghori do exist and really do seek "liberation" through deliberately impure acts (if the beheading of a liberal Muslim Iranian-American is one of them is, alas, not entirely clear). I sure hope that brain was well done (as in turned into ashes) and didn´t contain any kuru prions...

I almost fell from my chair when I saw this. Yes, it´s Boris Johnson worshipping Krishna and Prabhupada in a Hare Krishna temple in the UK! I assumed the Monster Raving Loony Party stood for the hilarity in UK politix, but clearly I didn´t know half of it...
