We can save the world

Let´s see if I got this straight. If we kill 6 billion people and reforest large portions of the world, temperatures will drop and we´ll save the world from man-made climate change? Also, we´ll get more resources, such as thorium, with which we can power non-radioactive nuclear plants, which in turn can heat enormous green-houses where our food will be grown during the next Little Ice Age.

So it seems we *can* save the world and even modern civilization, after all. If we could only get rid of those 6 billion people, and bring world population levels down to around 2 billion.

The only question is: what 6 billion people should we get rid of?

Since all “climate kids” are privileged White middle class ditto, they won´t be “woke” for long. The only way in which they can keep their privileges is by killing off most of the world´s population. The Third World, perhaps? And if they continue being “woke”, vegan and voluntarily poor, somebody else will draw the conclusion above instead. Somebody with more power, money and ruthlessness. China perhaps. Or Russia. Or even the West in a less woke incarnation…

Do you really believe that I´m the only one having spotted this?

The future will be even worse than any of us expected.

In defense of a sectarian program

I´m not sure if I can write a meaningful review of this material. “In Defense of the Trotskyist Program” is a bulletin published by the small Bolshevik Tendency, today known as the International Bolshevik Tendency (and probably even smaller). The pamphlet contains a polemical exchange between the BT (based in the United States) and a competing Trotskyist group, Workers Power (based in Britain). Workers Power had tried to recruit a third small group, the LTT, to its international network, then called MRCI. The LTT had fused with the BT instead, but subsequent political haranguing from Workers Power made the LTT-ers backslide and eventually join the MRCI. Today, nobody gives a damn, and very few people gave a damn even at the time. I have to say that sectarian Trotskyism is so far from my current preoccupations that I wonder whether this blog post serves any kind of purpose whatsoever, but since I review virtually anything, I decided to sink my teeth into this one, too!

The bulletin (published in 1988) contains three pieces. The first is the BT-LTT fusion platform, simply titled “For Trotskyism!” The second is Workers Power´s criticism of the platform and hence of the BT´s ideological positions in general. The third article is the BT´s belated response to the polemic, which restates the points already raised in the fusion document. I admit that the texts *do* give a clear overview of the political differences between the two groups, with the BT playing the “sectarian”, “Stalinophile” and “imperialist economist” role, similar to that of its parent group, the Spartacist League, from which the BT is a split. I obviously don´t support any side in this conflict, but if forced to chose, I would go with Workers Power, which were more tactically flexible and decidedly less pro-Stalinist. The MRCI backed Solidarnosc in Poland, while the BT (just like the Spartacists) supported Jaruzelski – surely a bizarre position for a Trotskyist!

I got two impressions from reading the BT´s side of the polemic. First, the group tries to play down the most “reactionary” traits of the Spartacist positions, without actually jettisoning them. Thus, the Spartacist League, perhaps uniquely on the left, opposed mass immigration from Third World nations to Western nations, arguing that such immigration could wipe out the identity of small countries such as Belgium and Netherlands. Imagine preaching this today! It was a hard sell on the hard left already back in the days, since both Belgium and Netherlands – while small compared to the US – had been colonial powers and were affiliated with NATO (they still are). The BT also oppose open borders, but mostly because it´s a “utopian” demand under capitalism and because oppressor nations such as the Han or the French could take over colonized territories using mass immigration as a tool. But the Spartacist League didn´t care about the Tibetans or the Kanaks – they were more interested in defending poor little Belgium. The BT has similar problems with the intractable Spartacist position concerning “interpenetrated peoples”. In its original version, this was really a defense of the national rights of peoples usually seen as colonial settlers by leftists: Jews in Palestine, Protestants on Northern Ireland, and in some formulations even Whites in South Africa. The BT, while keeping the theory of interpenetrated peoples, soften it considerably by offering “military support” for the IRA or the PLO against their respective enemies. However, they still uphold some other “pro-imperialist” positions of the Spartacists: neutrality during the “squalid” Falkland-Malvinas War (really a pro-British position since the BT explicitly defends British possession of the islands) and the (surreal) opposition to the 1979 Iranian revolution, which both the SL and the BT identifies solely with Khomeini and his fanaticized Islamists, as if the rest of the Iranian people weren´t at least tangentially involved.

The other thing that struck me was the strongly “ideologistic” tendency of the fusion platform – I use that word for lack of a better one. The BT are a propaganda group, and they seem to view ideas and abstract ideology as paramount in a way that sounds almost idealist, although I don´t think this is their intention, being dogmatic Marxists. I was reminded of Frank Richards´ RCP in this respect. It´s almost as if the BT wants to say “Before the working class can get up on the barricades, we [the small group propagandists] have to start winning the battle of ideas”. Bourgeois ideology is said to be the main bulwark of capitalist rule, and the most important task of revolutionaries is therefore to fight said ideology in the workers´ movement and inside the revolutionary party itself. Since the BT hardly has a union presence, this really means fighting other leftist groups by “exposing” them ideologically through literary polemics. Bourgeois ideology in the form of sectoralism is also strong within the Black, women´s and gay movements. So once again the BT´s most important task is to argue against Black nationalism, feminism and such – another de facto intra-mural leftist conflict. The constant emphasis on Stalin´s theory of “Socialism in One Country” also sounds ideologistic, as does the opposition to voting for reformist workers´ parties participating in popular fronts, since this supposedly suppresses the contradiction between their “bourgeois” leadership and the proletarian base. It doesn´t of course – to a Marxist, that contradiction is a objective material fact, but BT´s strongly sectarian propaganda apparently cannot intersect it if a popular front is formed.

The BT´s defense of the International Committee against the International Secretariat (the two competing wings of the Trotskyist world movement during the 1950´s and 1960´s) is also premised on a kind of ideologism. The BT is impressed by the IC´s doctrinaire verbiage, and also by their defense of independent Trotskyist organizations as against the “entryism sui generis” of the more openly revisionist IS. Of course, in order to spew purist ideological propaganda, one needs an independent “vanguard”, hence the BT´s siding with the IC (also, the Spartacist League came out of the IC tradition). Ironically, on this basis it becomes impossible to explain why the BT split from the Spartacist group, since the programs of the two groups are very similar! The BT-ers left the Spartacist tendency when its leader maximo James Robertson turned it into a kookish cult, but still with the same revolutionary program. Thus, the BTs left the Sparts because they (the BTs) were psychologically sane individuals, while the Robertson faithful were either super-cynical or downright mad. This eminently sensible line of action, alas, doesn´t square with the ideology-centered approach of the BT worldview…

The BT has quote-mined Trotsky and Cannon for proof-texts which sound just as sectarian as BT´s own politics. I say they are quoting the Old Man and his bulldog out of context! Still, the quotations *are* interesting. Here is James P Cannon, the long-time American Trotskyist leader:

“On the basis of a long historical experience, it can be written down as a law that revolutionary cadres, who revolt against their social environment and organize parties to lead a revolution, can—if the revolution is too long delayed—themselves degenerate under the continuing influences and pressures of this same environment....

"But the same historical experience also shows that there are exceptions to this law too. The exceptions are the Marxists who remain Marxists, the revolutionists who remain faithful to the banner. The basic ideas of Marxism, upon which alone a revolutionary party can be constructed, are continuous in their application and have been for a hundred years. The ideas of Marxism, which create revolutionary parties, are stronger than the parties they create and never fail to survive their downfall. They never fail to find representatives in the old organizations to lead the work of reconstruction.

‘‘These are the continuators of the tradition, the defenders of the orthodox doctrine. The task of the uncorrupted revolutionists, obliged by circumstances to start the work of organizational reconstruction, has never been to proclaim a new revelation—there has been no lack of such Messiahs, and they have all been lost in the shuffle—but to reinstate the old program and bring it up to date.’’

Hallelujah! If taken at face value, Cannon is saying that Marxists are exceptions to the historical laws, that the revolutionary program exists sui generis in a Platonic world of ideas, and that the orthodox faction can draw it down von oben by constructing a new exceptional organization. And while this is explicitly said not to be Messianic, that´s exactly what it is. Cannon is sounding like a Baptist preacher here. Somehow, I doubt Cannon really believed this.

The BT just might.

Don´t worship the gnomes

“1689 års katekes av Olaus Swebilius” is a very narrow product I bought mostly because it was temporarily sold cheaper than usual. The book is in Swedish, so most of this blog´s readers won´t be able to read it. In fact, I found it difficult to read, too, despite Swedish being my de facto first language. The reason? The bulk of the material is in 17th century Swedish. Brace yourself for some *very* weird (and weirdly inconsistent) spelling and a decidedly old fashioned grammar. Still, it seems the denizens of the 17th century were even worse off, since the original “1689 Catechism” contained frequent typing, or perhaps we should say setting, errors – including in the Biblical references…

Clearly, the good Lord wanted to test the faith of poor Olaus Swebilius, his trusted servant!

So who was Olaus Swebilius (or Olof Svebilius)? I admit I never heard of the man before buying this slender volume, but it seems he was quite the personality in his time. Swebilius was the Archbishop of Uppsala from 1681 to 1700, and hence the effective leader of the Lutheran Church of Sweden, at the time the only legal church in the Swedish kingdom (which was much larger than today). At this time, the clergy were represented in the Swedish Parliament, and as archbishop, Swebilius was the speaker of the clerical estate. He was a confidante of Karl XI, one of the most powerful kings in Swedish history. After Karl XI´s death, Swebilius crowned Karl XII king of Sweden – according to legend, the rash youth grabbed the crown from the hands of the archbishop and placed it on his head himself!

The 1689 Catechism had official status and contained the archbishop´s expositions on Martin Luther´s Small Catechism. The Swebilian Catechism is an expression of the Lutheran confessionalist orthodoxy (or perhaps supposed orthodoxy) dominant within the Church of Sweden at the time. I´m obviously no expert on Lutheran theology, orthodox or otherwise, since I frequently gasped when reading it. Thus, I had no idea that Lutherans believed Mary was ever virgin, but there it is. Nor does the Catechims deny the existence of saints, on earth or in heaven. It simply calls on the believer not to pray to them or worship them, since this dignity belongs to God only. I was also struck by the “high church” view of priestly authority and the strong sacramentalism. Swebilius expounds at some length on the need and necessity of confession before a priest.

I *did* know that Lutherans believed the flesh and blood of Christ is really present in the bread and wine consumed during communion (indeed, Luther´s position on the question is more logical if you have a Chalcedonian Christology than the Catholic one, which sounds Monophysite). The Apocrypha are referenced alongside the OT and the NT. The political perspective is strongly hierarchical and calls on servants to obey their masters, and everyone to obey the worldly establishment. Under Karl XI and Karl XII, royal absolutism in Sweden reached its apogee.

On a funnier note, the Catechism attacks certain folk beliefs and folk traditions. Thus, we are sternly admonished not to seek the aid of “tomtegubbar” (gnomes) or “skogzråå” (a female spirit and shape-shifter associated with the forest, today spelled “skogsrå”). This is idolatry and hence verboten.

We can´t say we haven´t been warned.

None dare call it carbon

“Modern Marvels: Diamond Mines” is a surprisingly comprehensive documentary about everything you ever wondered about diamonds. Formed deep inside the Earth, diamonds come to the surface through so-called kimberlite pipes. While many diamonds are used in industry, humans have a weird magpie-like obsession with these shiny objects and frequently use them as jewelry (suitably enhanced by a diamond cutter).

“Modern Marvels” show the entire process of production and distribution: mining, testing, cutting, marketing (Marilyn Monroe is featured). For a long time, a single corporation, De Beers, controlled almost the entire diamond market in the world. The company was founded by the notorious Cecil Rhodes but later taken over by the Oppenheimer family. South Africa was its main base of operation. Synthetic diamonds are also featured – today, technology makes it possible to make diamonds out of peanut butter, although I suspect the machine making this possible is more expensive than the actual diamonds! Blood diamonds are mentioned only in passing, the documentary briefly showing a rather nasty mining operation in Sierra Leone.

Chemically, diamonds are just lumps of carbon, and hence made of the same element as coal, pencil lead or most of your body. This sometimes makes me wonder what on earth all the fuzz is about, but it seems I´m quite alone in that thinking! And why are “legal” diamonds better than blood diamonds? The diamond mining operation in Botswana visited by “Modern Marvels” openly admits that their goal is to minimize any contact between the workers and the actual diamonds – so the workers can´t steal them, obviously.

A potentially sensational piece of information on this show is that diamonds might be everywhere in the universe! A scientist has discovered almost microscopic pieces of diamond-like matter in meteorites, and claims to be “soaked in diamonds” after a good days work at the laboratory, to which the narrator responds “few would complain about such a condition”. So far, neither De Beers nor any other actor has found a commercial application for these space diamonds, said to be older than the Earth itself, so unless a Koh-i-Noor comes tumbling down from the skies, I think the obviously rigged diamond market is safe…

Recommended, if you know nothing about volcanically fermented carbon.

The journey of the gemstones

“Treasures of the Earth: Gems” is an interesting, almost fascinating, NOVA documentary about…yes…gemstones. I admit I knew next to nothing about gems before watching this, except for one thing. I *did* know that diamonds are really nothing else than pieces of carbon made inordinately hard by some physical process. In plain English, diamonds are made of the same element as coal…or pencil lead.

What I learned from this production: diamonds come from the interior of the Earth and come to the surface through volcanic eruptions, other gemstones are products of plate tectonics, sapphires are more rare than diamonds, sapphires and rubies are really the same thing, jade is actually two different kinds of mineral, ordinary rain water plays an important role in the formation of opal, and dinosaur fossils in Australia occasionally “opalize” when said opal replaces the common rock fossils are usually made of. Wow!

It´s difficult not to wax philosophical when reflecting over our propensity for glittery pieces of carbon, silicon or whatever the gems are really made of. Thus, sales of so-called blood diamonds finance many African warlords. One of the most unique gemstones in the world, the supposedly cursed Hope diamond, gets its blue color (and its worth of 100 million dollars) from an impurity which only lets through the blue wave-length of light. Yes, a chance impurity in a small piece of carbon is worth more than your life savings…

Seriously, where do I sign up? :D

Recommended. And no, it´s not narrated by Leonard Nimoy.

Jevons paradox

“Secrets of the Super Elements” is interesting, but I hate the accent of the British narrator and the lack of good background music. Originally, I actually watched it with the sound off! Otherwise, it makes me nervous. But OK, enough about my psychological quirks, LOL.

The “super elements” mentioned in this BBC documentary include indium, rhenium, neodymium, tungsten and some others. Their properties are frequently bizarre. Thus, tungsten is virtually unbreakable. You can probably trick somebody into thinking it´s alien technology! Rhenium can withstand extremely high temperatures. Indium is a metal that can easily turn into a liquid. And so on. These super-elements have become necessary for our modern civilization. Indium is the weird element that makes the touch screen work in your smart phone, rhenium is used in modern jet engines, neodymium makes wind power generators less likely to crash, etc.

While the technological gadgets made possible by super elements are a testimony to human ingenuity, the problem of sustainability constantly rears its head. These elements are often rare and difficult to mine. Half of the world´s lithium comes from a single place in Bolivia, yet lithium is the metal we need to store the power from wind turbines when the wind isn´t blowing. Tungsten is used by the military in the protective armor of tanks, and also in industry for drills hard enough to penetrate steel or rock. Unfortunately, 80% of tungsten is mined in China – imagine the leverage this gives the Chinese government! If you´re American, you might be relieved to hear that most helium deposits are found in the United States. I always assumed helium (which is used in children´s balloons at amusement parks) comes directly from the air around us, but actually it´s an incredibly rare substance that has to be mined.

Population increase leads to increased demand of all the super elements (and, of course, everything else) and it´s not always obvious that the supply is equally abundant. Note also the following irony: rhenium has made air flight cheaper by conserving energy, but this has made flying more popular, thereby increasing total fuel use – and contributing to man-made climate change. A fine example of the so-called Jevons paradox! The documentary proposes mining in space as a solution for resource scarcity, which is (of course) absurd. There are limits even to human ingenuity…

On YouTube, the documentary has been cut at some places by whoever has uploaded it, leading to all kinds of trollish conspiracy ideas in the commentary section. Somehow, I doubt the truth of the Illuminati can be found in a production of this kind, but perhaps that´s just what they *want* us to believe, right?

Good luck, Jonathan

To all my readers in Nigeria: why oh why did you re-elect Gafaar Nimeiry as your president? :D

Get off your meds, Donald

Donald Trump wants the EU nations to take back ISIS terrorists with EU citizenship held captive by the US-backed Kurds in northern Syria. To punish them, obviously.

I say Trump is wrong.

We´re talking about Sweden, guys. Where gang rapists get away with a few months if they claim to be under 18 years of age. What kind of “punishment” does Trump expect ISIS to get from the naïve, woke, super-liberal Swedes???

Not even Swedish Social Democratic PM Stefan Löfvén wants the ISIS people back. Something´s seriously amiss when Löfvén sounds more “based” than Mr Badass himself, Donald J Trump.

The Kurds should be allowed to execute the ISIS fighters and their brides, period.

I have spoken.
