High functioning

"UFO" is an embarrasingly bad film released straight to video in 2018. I´m not sure how Sony managed to convince Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully in "The X-Files") to appear in this production. Did she need pocket money? The plot is apparently inspired by a famous UFO observation on Chicago´s international airport back in 2006. The main character, math genius and insufferable teenage nerd Derek, suffers from Asperger´s syndrome. I admit he is convincing (actor Alex Sharp has starred autistic teens before). He even has that typical "Mark Zuckerberg look".

Unfortunately, the story is pretty "autistic" too, and revolves almost entirely around Derek´s nerdie ability to calculate equations, sound amplitudes, wind speed, and what have you. No aliens, and virtually no UFOs either. The only action are constant quarrels between Derek and his surprisingly hot girlfriend (no autism there). Sure, the FBI shows up and orchestrates a cover up, but in the end, their agent turns out to be some kind of science guy who wants to solve Fermi´s paradox and establish contacts with higher civilizations in the cosmos so human progress can continue?!

The film ends with Derek getting evidence for UFOs, a new job at a prestigious science lab, and (perhaps) the hot girl. The viewer, alas, gets almost nothing. The most funny part of "UFO" is when Gillian Anderson´s character debunks conspiracy theory - here we go again, LOL.

Not really recommended.
