A new breed of populism?



It seems to be a general trend all over the world that politicians who are neither left nor right, or even center, but simply authoritarian in general, perhaps with a slight populist streak, come to power. Does this signify something? Think Duterte in the Phillippines. Here is another example: Nayib Bukele in El Salvador. I admit I never heard of him before! Here is a critical “liberal” take on Bukele from something called Americas Quarterly. Of course, there are also many authoritarian leaders with a specific ideological appeal, and various more or less nebulous populists who aren´t that authoritarian. Clearly, something´s up…
