A review of "Forever Young & Other Hits", a greatest hits album released by Alphaville.
Alphaville was a German synthpop band popular during
the 1980's. They were the band all cool teenagers loved to hate and laugh at,
at least in "my" high school. They weren't very pretty either, and
actually looked somewhat gay.
And, of course, their hits became iconic. Is anybody surprised?
Frankly, what would the 80's have been *without* Alphaville? These guys *are* the 80's. Especially "Forever young" and "Sounds like a melody". Every time I want to remind myself and others of the synthpop era, I play "Sounds like a melody" aloud somewhere. The song still works, after all this time, in a weird kind of way.
Besides, the cool people who hated this band were running after...Erasure and Ultravox. Nothing wrong with that, but Vince Clark and Midge Ure were hardly Bach or Mozart either, so I really don't see why they should be considered more slick than German guys with a bad haircut...
Still, there was *one* problem with Alphaville. During their entire career, they only made six good songs: "Forever young", "Sounds like a melody", "Jet Set", "Big in Japan", "Dance with me" and "Romeos". (That song only works with the entertaining video clip, however.)
Thus, I don't understand what some of the other customer reviewers are complaining about?! All these songs are included on this collection, which sells for only 6 dollars.
What more could a synthpop fan want, really? The collection would have been even better if the other 4 songs were quietly expunged...
So stop whining and place your order today! :-D
