Not very romantic... |
The Bohemian Forest (Böhmerwald or Sumava) is a hill
region in Central Europe. It straddles the border between the Czech Republic,
Germany and Austria. This documentary is a kind of covert “tourist information”
brochure about the area.
The footage is superb, but it does get annoyingly romantic at times. The local inhabitants, who supposedly live in perfect harmony with nature, strike me as well fed, well bred, clean and endowed with modern technology. Their cows are well fed, too. Hardly medieval subsistence farming, I'm afraid! The traditional arts and crafts in Sumava include glassblowing and cider production.
Most of the documentary shows insects, spiders, songbirds, unusual flowery plants and sheep. But yes, the lynx, the otter and the moose are also featured.
Not bad, if you like laid back nature documentaries (I sometimes do), but perhaps somewhat “scripted”…
