| Ultra-leftist saboteurs in action |
In retrospect, Marxists support the sans-culottes (always) and the
Jacobins (most of the time) during the French Revolution. No surprise there, I
suppose. But there is *something* strange about the Marxist position. The
classical Marxists believed that a socialist revolution was impossible in
France during the 18th century. The sans-culottes and the Jacobins
were doomed to failure. The revolution could only be victorious as a bourgeois
revolution. Only capitalism and the rule of the bourgeoisie was possible in
France in 1789. The material conditions for socialism didn´t yet exist.
But if so, Marxists should logically support the moderate factions in
the French Revolution! Read: La Fayette, the Gironde, the Directorate or even a
certain Napoleon Bonaparte.
More, Marxists should *actively oppose* the sans-culottes and Jacobins
as “ultraleftist deviationists and saboteurs”, who “threaten the unity of the
people” and thereby risk “aiding the royalist counter-revolution”, and so on. Indeed,
Mensheviks and Stalinists later drew exactly this position when dealing with
the Russian revolution (in the Menshevik case) and all revolutions except the
Russian one (in the Stalinist case).
But sure, I suppose they had simply misunderstood the Dialectic. Or
something.
Nja, själva frågeställningen är absurd. I en tid när det inte kunde finnas marxister är det lita orimligt att ställa frågan om hur marxister skulle ställa sig.
ReplyDeleteAtt tänka sig marxister åka tillbaks i en tidsmaskin och sedan gå emot alla radikala revolutioner i pre-kapitalistiska samhällen är ju lite konstig.
Speciellt som marxismens syn är att alla revolutioner före den socialistiska uppstod pga en ekonomisk dynamik. Kapitalismen växer fram i ekonomin innan den blir en politisk makt. Om borgarklassen POLITISKA makt i Frankrike skulle skjutits upp e.vis i tio år skulle kapitalismen inte stoppats för det.
Däremot skulle ett revolutionärt Frankrika, i väntan på undergången, kunnat skapa idéer inom olika områden som skulle varit till oerhörd nytta när den arbetarrörelsen växte fram femtio år senare.
