The UN just voted to replace the Mercator projection with some more modern stuff (at least on UN maps). Only the United States voted against, calling it a ridiculous pseudo-issue. Sure, maybe. But this is of course the same Trump administration which renamed the Gulf of Mexico "Gulf of America" and (apparently) also rebaptized Lake Ontario. The pot is calling the kettle black, methinks.
But then it struck me. Greenland is enormously effing large at Mercator world maps. Larger than Africa, in fact. Maybe *that´s* why the POTUS likes this particular projection?

Har det inte hänt förrän nu? Jag minns hur det fanns en debattartikel i SvD 1965 - över 60 år sedan - som sa att Mercators projektion borde sluta användas. Ett av argumenten var märkligt nog att om man använde Mercators projektion insåg man inte hur viktigt det var att USA hade trupper i Sydvietnam för att försvara landet mot kommunismen - eftersom Vietnam såg så löjligt litet ut i Mercators projektion.
ReplyDeleteEnligt Wiki har UNESCO länge promoterat ett alternativ till Mercator som kallas Gall-Peter projection. Hörde talas om det redan som barn i en bok från 70-talet.
