Killer or just filler? In this episode of "MonsterQuest", the producers decide to investigate the bizarre rumour that feral killer chimps lurk in the swamps of Florida, which apparently has an environment similar to that of southern Mali, where chimpanzees are thriving.
The rumour is obviously unfounded.
As pointed out by the experts interviewed on the show, an escaped pet chimp or
zoo chimp doesn't know how to survive in the wild, and would instead keep close
to human habitat to steal food, find company, etc. Since adult chimpanzees are
extremely dangerous, this would cause potentially fatal attacks on humans. The
program contains scary interviews with victims of chimp attacks, but please
note that these were recently escaped animals, not feral ones hiding in the
underbrush. In Florida, however, there have apparently been no reports of
chimpanzees trying to steal food from local house-owners, or mauling them. So
what are people actually seeing? Probably misidentified native animals.
Ironically, there *is* an unknown animal or "cryptid" supposedly
living in the swamps of the southern United States. It is, of course, the swamp
ape or skunk ape, the Cajun version of Bigfoot. I know its prohibité to explain
one unknown with another, but unless we are dealing with werewolves or mermen
pretending to be chimpish just to annoy the local anomalists, I say what people
are seeing should really be featured on "Finding Bigfoot" rather than
on another boring, inconclusive episode of "MonsterQuest"... :P
PS. This product has been misidentified by Amazon. It's a DVD, not a toy!
