The birds shall prophecy


The Seventh Day Adventist-related channel Scriptures Illustrator really goes out on a limb here, relating a strange miracle story about an Inuit prophet in Alaska during the 19th century, a certain Maniilaq, who became a "Christian" after a divine prophecy given to him by a bird?! 

The Adventists seem interested in him since he supposedly kept the Saturday Sabbath. According to ChatGPT, Maniilaq was a real person - probably a syncretistic visionary and healer. Even the Adventist video linked above describe practices which sound magical or shamanistic. ChatGPT also claims that the Sabbatarian claims are very late (20th century).

The idea that various Native tribes heard about the Bible or Jesus already before the arrival of Christian missionaries does exist among some...Christian missionaries themselves. Which is actually pretty strange. This is evidently another example.

  1. Det mest störande i videon är beskrivningen av inuiter/ "eskimåer". Det sägs att de inte hade något namn för gud - och det är klart att de inte hade något ord för en monoteistisk gud. men de hade såväl gudar och gudinnor, framförallt gudinnan Sedna. Dessutom beskrivs att de hade ett hårt kvinnoförtryck - ungefär som om något sådant inte fanns hos de ryska och US-amerikanska kristna som sedan kom under 17- och 1800-tal. . Jag har läst en del om inuitisk religion. och samhälle, och det verka definitivt inte varit mer patriarkalt än hos de de västerlänningar och ryssar om sedan kom.

  3. Videon har en annan tendens också. När de beskriver hur inuiterna övergav sina gamla vidskepelser (inklusive distinktionen ren/oren föda) så låter det nästan som när Jesus eller Paulus upphäver den gammeltestamentliga lagen. Eller när reformationen avskaffade de gamla katolska "vidskepelserna". Åtminstone får jag sådana vibbar. Tyckte detta var lite ironiskt eftersom adventisterna fortfarande högtidlighåller sabbaten på lördagar... Som ju kommer från Gamla Testamentet.

  4. Sedan undrar jag varför inte en väldigt "fundamentalistisk" grupp uppfattar hela denna historia som heresi? Fast man kanske kan hitta några Bibel-citat som "bevisar" att man kan tänka på detta sätt. Paulus säger att även hedningarna vet att Gud finns eftersom han gjort detta uppenbart i naturen och kosmos. Och i GT finns det t.ex. faraoner som känner till Gud. Och så har vi den mystiske Melkisedek. Så man skulle väl kunna exegetera detta som att även personer utanför den "rätta" ättelinjen (den som går från Abraham till Jesus - eller kanske från Shem till Jesus?) kan ha kunskap om Bibelns Gud. Och så gör väl många kristna också, men jag är lite förvånad över att stenhårda "bokstavstroende" gör det, istället för att fördöma Maniilaq som en demoniskt inspirerad synkretist bla-bla. Finns ju en del bibelverser man kan använda då också...
